Artillery attack kills one, and injuries three villagers in Thaton

HURFOM: On May 14, 2023, the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People Defense Force (PDF) attacked the junta’s military base in Pain Nel Taw village, Thaton Township, Mon State. In response, the military junta launched artillery attacks targeting area villages.
“In the evening, the military shot artillery shells at least 20 times into the village. One resident who was going outside at that time died in the attack,” said a local source.

HURFOM: In the 2023-24 academic year, the Mon National Schools in Ye Township, Mon State are experiencing a shortage of schoolteachers. According to local sources, this will create challenges in the classrooms.
“I’ve heard that about 30 Mon schoolteachers in Ye Township resigned from their duties. Some teachers will go to Thailand for work and some decided to stop teaching because the salary is very low,” said a Mon schoolteacher.

HURFOM: According to family members of seven detainees abducted by the junta forces on May 19 from Than Taung town, in Karen State, their loved ones are still missing as of today.
Seven local men living in the 13-Miles ward No.1 of Than Taung town were arrested in the early Morning of May 19th by an estimated 20 members of junta troops.

HURFOM: According to local sources, junta forces entered villages in eastern Dawei and arrested at least 10 villagers from 3 villages, then used them as human shields yesterday.
For the last two days, 150 troops from the combined 406th and 409 Light Infantry Battalions (LIB) raided U Yin Kyi, Dar Thwe Kyauk and Ah Nya Pyar villages in the eastern region of Dawei and arrested about 10 villagers.

HURFOM: A credible source confirmed this morning that one of 8 Dawei residents who were arbitrarily abducted and interrogated over the past few days died in one of the junta’s detention centers in #Dawei.
Along with seven other civilians, Ko Kyaw Thura, 31 was arrested by the junta council on May 15. He has been reported missing since his arrest. Ko Kyaw Thura, was from Dawn Ngu ward of Dawei town.

HURFOM: The junta’s indiscriminate firing into villages with artillery weapons persists in Nyaung Lay Pin District. According to the information received in the morning of May 20, 2023, the junta military’s joint forces, Light Infantry Battalions numbers, 599, and 590, along with the 44th, and 84rth, Infantry battalions opened fired more than 50 artillery shells targeting Sa Wae and Kyung Taw villages in Mu Township, in Nyaung Lay Pin District, Karen State.

HURFOM: On May 18, 2023, a Karen armed group entered Ah Nin village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State which led to an armed clash with the Burmese army. The Ah Nin Police Station then indiscriminately launched the artillery attacks targeting surrounding areas.

HURFOM: Burmese soldiers based at check-points at the entrance and exit of Ka Lane Ong Town, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division are forcefully collecting the phone numbers and addresses of truck drivers.
Drivers have told HURFOM staff that this unusual behavior is making them live in fear and worry.
A truck driver said, “During the collection of my phone number and my address, the soldiers threatened me that I have to report to them immediately when they phone us. If not, I’ll be arrested.”

HURFOM: About 8 am on May 18, 2023, a Karen armed group entered Ah Nin village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State and the group shot two young, motorbike riders. One man was killed and the other injured.
According to local sources the deceased man was 27 years old. He was shot in the head, and died at the scene. The survivor was shot in the leg.

The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) remains deeply concerned at the escalation of assaults, especially those which have targeted civilian homes and infrastructure.
