Military junta destroys roads in Kaw Ka Rate Township: Leaves villagers without connecting transportation at harvest time

HURFOM: Since May 13, 2023, the Burmese military has been destroying concrete or asphalt roads connecting villages in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.
“They also destroyed the road near the Taung Kyar Inn Bridge. The Vice Commander of the 343rd Light Infantry Battalion supervised the destruction. They destroyed roads with a backhoe. Now about 30 villages have lost connection with Kaw Ka Rate Town. All villagers are in trouble,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.

HURFOM: On May 15, around 10 am, residents from the Na Bu Lae area reported seeing military surveillance helicopters aggressively scouting their communities from the sky.
The junta military had executed airstrikes in the Na Bu Lae area, in the morning of May 14, 2023.
One villager who witnessed the Junta’s helicopter flying at a low altitude of roughly 200 feet with machine guns pointed and ready to shoot at anything they saw.

HURFOM: In the Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division, the military junta banned riding two wheel motorbikes from January 25, 2023, only allowing three wheel motorbikes for travel and transport.
Villagers who could not afford to transform their motorbikes into three wheel motorbikes set up two baskets at the rear of their motorbikes and use them for daily purposes, in the hopes that they could evade the ban.

HURFOM: In 2022, the Mandalay Yoma Solar Company and the Administrator of Pauk Pin Kwin village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division conducted a survey of villagers to gauge their interest to receive solar electricity.
Pauk Pin Kwin has about 400 houses and the villagers had agreed to buy solar electricity from the company. They agreed to pay from 300,000 to 700,000 Kyat for an “electric meter box” and to a fee rate of 450 Kyat per kWh.

HURFOM: Residents of Nabu Lae village, Yephyu Township, confirmed the junta’s military attacked the area around Nabu Lae village at 9 am local time. The area is where the Dawei Special Economic Zone project is located.
“At about 4:00 am, there was an intense battle between the junta forces and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) near the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Wat Chaung, Nabu Lae area, northwestern Dawei,” said a source from Nabulae, who talked to HURFOM reporters.

HURFOM: On May 8, 2023, the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People Defense Forces attacked the 97th Light Infantry Battalion based at Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State.
Since that attack, the military junta has continuously been arresting residents. As of today, about 40 residents were arrested and detained.

HURFOM: Dawei residents are reporting that t junta’s troops are committing crimes against humanity in the Tenasserim Region by arresting local civilians and using them as human shields during armed conflicts.
The use of human shields is forbidden by Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions. It is also a specific intent war crime as codified in the Rome Statute, which was adopted in 1998.
