HURFOM Releases Latest Voice Up Briefing Highlighting Gendered Impacts of Junta Violence

The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) has published the third issue of its quarterly Voice Up series, documenting the worsening gendered impacts of the attempted coup in Southeastern Burma. Covering the period of July to September 2025, the report highlights alarming levels of violence targeting women and children across Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi Region.
According to HURFOM’s field data, 18 women were killed, 53 were injured, and 28 were arbitrarily arrested during this reporting period. At least 15 children were killed and another 27 were wounded. Many of these attacks took place in areas where there was no active fighting, underscoring the junta’s deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilians.

HURFOM: On September 30th, 2025, 22-year-old Oak Kar Kyaw, 17-year-old Khant Thu Aung and 16-year-old Aung Thu Zin, all from Paw Daw Mu village, Thaton Township, Mon State were arrested by a junta patrol team while sitting at a public pavilion in the village.

HURFOM: On September 28th, 2025, a junta’s regiment advanced into Karen Lay Sake village, Thaton Township, Mon State and arrested nearly 30 teenagers.
The regiment consisting of about 70 troops entered the village at approximately 5 am and arrested the children at their homes.

HURFOM: On September 28th, 2025, the ward administrator and the hundred-household leader of Myo Ma (1) Ward, Lamine Town, Ye Township, Mon State were shot and killed by revolutionary forces.
According to local sources, immediately following the incident, the army tightened its security at the village roads and began arresting young men and extorting money from them.

HURFOM: Clashes between junta forces and allied resistance groups have raged for two consecutive days near Aye Kani village, located inside the Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Yebyu Township, Dawei District. The violence has forced residents from at least six surrounding villages to flee, according to locals and those close to the resistance.

HURFOM: At least 73 homes were destroyed after junta troops set fire to Kyauk Hlay Karr village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Dawei District.
According to a statement released by the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 4, Department of Public Relations and Information, the arson attack followed clashes between junta troops advancing from Uttu village towards Inn Pyar and Kyauk Hlay Karr villages and resistance forces on September 29 and 30.

HURFOM: On September 25th, a military column of over 250 troops entered Ye Township and abducted over 30 local men and women as human shields.
As the military entered the villages of Ah Dane, Wel Hine, Taung Soon, Yaw Kalay, and Sone Pa Dauk villages in Ye Township, local residents were captured and taken to be used as human shields.

HURFOM has confirmed another appalling case of sexual violence committed by Junta troops in Bokpyin Township, Myeik District, where a young woman was repeatedly raped after being arrested.
On September 20, soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 358 forced two married women from Sakan Thar Village (locally known as Yae Bet Village), under Htawng Sone Ma Hek village tract, to accompany them as guides. The troops were camped nearby in Bodaw Village.

HURFOM field sources confirmed that 35 civilians from Kayin Lay Seik Village, Thaton Township, Mon State, remain in military custody after being forcibly taken by Junta troops on 28 September. Among those detained is a 13-year-old child and at least two women in their early fifties. Villagers reported that the group was abducted to be used as human shields at the frontlines.
