Junta extorts displaced persons who return home

HURFOM: On April 26th, 2024, the military junta announced that displaced persons from Ta Ra Nar, Than Ga Long, Dhammasa and nearby villages could return home as there has been no armed clash.

Those who want to return home must show their household list, a recommendation letter (from the village Administration offices) and ID cards. But local sources reported to HURFOM that junta’s troops stationed at the entrance check-points of villages are extorting money from displaced persons attempting to return to their homes.

Motorbike robberies happening frequently in Southern Ye Township

HURFOM: In April, 2024, at least five cases of motorbike robbery took place, with the owners threatened at gunpoint.  The thefts took place on the motorway between villages in Southern Ye Township, Mon State. 

Locals reported to HURFOM that on April 2, a 40-year-old woman from Hnee Hnu village was riding a motorbike and two men threatened her with a gun between Du Yar and Pa Line Thame villages. Then, they robbed her motorbike.

Junta’s artillery attack kills plantation worker in Thaton

HURFOM: On April 27th, 2024, the military junta targeted Dar Yoe village, Da Nu village tract, Thaton Township, Mon State with indiscriminate artillery attacks and killed a plantation worker. 

According to a statement by the Thaton District Karen National Union (KNU) the 402nd Thaton-based artillery regiment launched two artillery attacks targeting the village.  An artillery explosion killed 67-year-old T Yoe, a native of Naung Bo village who worked on a betel nut farm in Dar Yoe village.

Junta’s artillery attack destroys six houses in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: On April 28th, 2024, the military junta, 310 artillery regiment based in Thane Za Yet Town, Kyike Hto township targeted the village of Kha Ywell, Mon State with indiscriminate artillery attacks.

 The artillery explosions destroyed six houses in Htin Tell Ward, Kha Ywell village.

Junta’s troops disguising themselves as PDF extort traveler’s and drivers

HURFOM: On April 26, 2024, the military junta’s troops disguised themselves as the members of the People Defense Forces and extorted money from travelers in Chaught Chin village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tenasserim Division.

Witnesses reported to HURFOM that the junta’s troops were in disguise, and extorted a huge amount of money from the travelers using the Myeik – Dawei Highway Road.

Junta shoots and kills two men during military incursion

HURFOM: On April 25th, 2024, approximately 200 military junta troops launched an operation in Kaw Bane, Kaw Pauk and Kaw Pa Line villages, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Mon State. Junta forces arrested and tortured local villagers and stole gold, cash, jewelry and motorbikes.

During the incident, a 30-year-old Kaw Bane resident, Min Aung Chan and a 38-year-old Kaw Pa Line resident, Nai Seik Gyi had their mobile phones taken as well as their motorbikes.

Elderly woman killed by junta’s artillery attack in Long Lone

On April 25th, 2024, an 80-year-old woman from Htein Thit Ward, Long Lone Town,

Tenasserim Division was killed by the junta’s artillery attack.

The military regiment based in Long Lone Police Station launched an indiscriminate artillery attack and one of the artillery shells exploded in the compound of Grandma Daw Khin Aye’s house and killed the house owner.

“She just returned from a funeral house and was hit and killed by the artillery attack when she entered her house compound. The Long Lone Police Station is responsible for the attack. There was an armed clash in the morning,” said a Long Lone resident.

On April 3rd, 2024, a man from Thar Yar Gone village, Long Lone Township was also killed by the junta’s artillery attack.

According to local sources, the junta’s regiment based in Long Lone Town frequently launches indiscriminate artillery attacks from the outskirts of the town even when there are no active armed clashes, forcing residents to move out and find a safe shelter.

Junta kills father during his detention

HURFOM: On April 18th, 2024, the military junta arrested five residents from Kan Bauk and Phaung Taw villages, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.

Among those arrested, U Win Bo and his son were detained at Kan Bauk based Mawrawaddy Navy Command.  On April 24^th, the junta informed the family that U Win Bo was dead.

Despite invitation from junta, Dhammasa residents will not return to village

HURFOM: On April 26th, 2024, the Kyikemayaw Township Administration Authority representing the military junta installed a signboard inviting displaced persons from Dhammasa village to return home, as there has been no armed conflict.

“How can we return home? Our houses were destroyed in a fire. The entire village was burnt down. We have no home to go back to. I don’t think the armed conflict has really ended. We still worry about another possible armed clash. There might be one or two villagers who go back home but the majority still wait and see,” said a displaced person.

Junta’s navy raids Kaw Bane village and arrests, tortures and kills villagers

HURFOM: Local sources report that on the morning of April 25^th, 2024, junta Navy troops launched a brutal raid on Kaw Bane village in Kaw Ka Rate Township, torturing and killing several villagers. Among the victims was Mi Chan Aie, a 20-year-old woman, a daughter of Nai Mya Ai and Mi Zar Zar Htun, residents of the western ward of Kaw Bane in Kawkareik Township, Karen State.
