12 political prisoners confined and tortured in Hpa-An Prison:  One dead

HURFOM: On June 14th, 2025, 12 political prisoners serving their prisoner terms in the “Kyoe Kyar” Dormitory of the Hpa-An Prison, Hpa-An Township, Karen State were confined and tortured by the prison authorities after being accused of creating instability in the prison.

Prison authorities ordered them to stay in confinement for three months with leg cuffs. They were also beaten and tortured.

An official from the Political Prisoners’ Network Myanmar (PPNM) said prison authorities retaliated against the political prisoners because they reported, to the Director of the Prison Department during a visit to the prison, that they had been forced to work and had to drink and eat unclean drinking water and food. 

When beating them, the authorities asked them “Will you say again that the fish meal is very small?” and “Will you file a report again? noted the PPNM official.

On July 13th, 2025, Ko Nyan Min Tun was killed from the hash torture by the prison authorities. Authorities accused Ko Zaw Win aka Ko Jeck that he played a leading role in filing a report to the Director, and beat and tortured him daily for a month. Ko Zaw Win had suffered a serious mental disorder and he attempted suicide recently.

Before the death of Ko Nyan Min Tun, some political prisoners requested the prison authorities allow him to receive medical treatment but they denied the request,” continued the official.

HURFOM was informed and had have concrete evidence that the Second Lieutenant Ye Khine aka Yakine of the Hpa-An Prison threatened the 12 political prisoners that he would kill them if the news of confinement and torture reached outside the prison.
