Motorbike robberies happening frequently in Southern Ye Township

HURFOM: In April, 2024, at least five cases of motorbike robbery took place, with the owners threatened at gunpoint. The thefts took place on the motorway between villages in Southern Ye Township, Mon State.
Locals reported to HURFOM that on April 2, a 40-year-old woman from Hnee Hnu village was riding a motorbike and two men threatened her with a gun between Du Yar and Pa Line Thame villages. Then, they robbed her motorbike.
“I returned from Ye. First, they robbed my purse. Later, they dragged me down from the bike. They hit me twice with the gun and took my bike and ran away. I still have a wound to my head,” said the victim.
On April 21st, two 16-year-old boys were talking at a “public rest house” beside the motorway between Ah Baw and Du Yar village. Six men with guns approached and threatened and beat them. Then, they robbed the motorbike.
In the same month, a 70-year-old man from Kaw Dut village, Ye Township died of a cut throat injury and his motorbike was stolen.
“He went to the plantation as usual. But he didn’t return home. So his son went to search for him and found he had died from a cut throat injury at the hut. He also suffered from an axe blow to his forehead. Nowadays, a brutal murder can be committed only for a motorbike. There is no rule of law. Nothing is under protection,” said a local source.
There has been a gang of armed robbers active nearby Ah Baw, Du Yar, Pa Line Thame, Hnee Hnu, Gu Ga Taw, Thar Ga Ram and Andin villages, Phar Lane area, Southern Ye Township and the group has targeted motorbike riders.
“Sometimes, they steal the bike and kill the person. It’s more worrying for the women. At this time, no one can even complain. Every victim has to suffer in silence,” said a Phar Lane resident.
