Junta extorts displaced persons who return home
May 2, 2024
HURFOM: On April 26th, 2024, the military junta announced that displaced persons from Ta Ra Nar, Than Ga Long, Dhammasa and nearby villages could return home as there has been no armed clash.
Those who want to return home must show their household list, a recommendation letter (from the village Administration offices) and ID cards. But local sources reported to HURFOM that junta’s troops stationed at the entrance check-points of villages are extorting money from displaced persons attempting to return to their homes.
“On April 28, a man from Than Ga Long was extorted by the soldiers at the check-point located at the entrance of Ta Ra Nar village. He had to give 200,000 MMK,” said a local woman from Ta Ra Nar village.
The military junta is allowing villagers to pass at the Ta Ra Nar check-point only between 9am to 12pm. Displaced persons who want to return to their home must leave their ID cards at the check-point.
“Displaced persons who have lost their ID cards are unable to return home. The villagers who want to return home have to queue at the check-point in the morning. The soldiers open the gate when they wake up and the villagers are allowed to enter the village,” said a displaced person.
The junta-appointed Administrators in Kyikemayaw Township have persuaded displaced persons to return home but they are still frightened to return, because the junta has launched military operations and artillery attacks on the villages, and arrested and killed villagers.
