Junta conducts constant arrests in Thanbyuzayat over December and January

HURFOM: Since December, 2023, the military junta has arrested nearly 70 residents of Thanbyuzayat, accusing them of promoting terrorism by providing financial support to the People’s Defense Forces (PDF).

The junta continues to arrest individuals on a constant basis into January, 2024, and have put in place mobility restrictions, as well as interrogating rubber plantation workers who have to go to their workplaces at night.

Couple sustains injury in armed clash in Bilin

January 10, 2024

HURFOM: On January 6th, 2024, an armed clash took place between the military junta and the Karen National Liberation Army in Ah Lu Lay village, Bilin Township, Mon State.  The fighting injured at least two plywood factory workers.

The victims were 40-year-old U Zay Yar Min and 36-year-old Daw Ne Ne Aye.

More than 30 military junta troops entered Ah Lu Lay village in the morning, which led to an exchange of gunfire with the KNLA in the village.

More than 30 homes in Long Lone burnt down during 11-day military operation

HURFOM: During an 11-day military operation that ran from December 26th, 2023 to January 5th, 2024, the military junta burnt down more than 30 houses in Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.

Woman dies in shooting incident in Kyike Hto

January 9, 2024

HURFOM: On January 4rth, 2024, a shooting took place near the village market in Moke Pa Lin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State that accidentally killed a local woman.

Two unknown gunmen on a motorbike shot 40-year-old Nyi Nyi Lwin who was a notorious informer for the military and the police. He was shot at a betel nut shop near the village market.

About 3,000 refugees in Thaton District in  urgent need of humanitarian aid

HURFOM: Roughly 3,000 residents from Thaton District, Mon State who fled their homes for nearly a month are urgently in need of food, medicine, shelter, blankets and sweaters, according to social workers.

On December 13th, 2023, about 1,600 residents from Upper Win Tar Ban and Win Tar Ban Gyi villages had to flee their homes due to armed clashes at the Win Tar Ban military base.

Battalions Plant Landmines alongside Thanbyuzayat-Ye Highway: Danger created for plantation workers

HURFOM: The revolutionary forces are gaining more control along the Thanbyuzayat-Ye Highway in Mon State.  In response, Burmese military battalions are now planting landmines around their battalion positions and in nearby plantations. This development is creating a major risk for plantation workers.

Junta’s amnesty initiative includes few political prisoners

HURFOM: In order to commemorate the 76th Independence Day on January 4, 2024, the military junta freed 9,652 prisoners under terms of an amnesty initiative. 760 prisoners from Mon State were released, but only 31 political prisoners were included in the list of those released.

HURFOM, First Week of January 2024

The first week of the year in Southeastern Burma saw more violence by the junta in target areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), including Mon State, Karen State and the Tanintharyi region. The situation of human rights continues to escalate, particularly in Mon State, where since 19 December, the junta has waged widespread and indiscriminate attacks against local, unarmed civilians. On 29 December 2023, HURFOM released a statement of concern after documenting the forced displacement of more than 22,000 people, the deaths of ten and nearly two dozen injured.

Armed clash forces approximately 200 residents to flee their homes in Kyaung Yaw village, Ye Township

January 5, 2024

HURFOM: On December 31st, 2023, an armed clash took place between the local military regiments and the revolutionary alliance forces in Southern Mon State at Kyaung Yaw village, Ye Township, Mon State.

After the armed clash, the military regiment launched artillery attacks on Kyaung Yaw, Eye Shay and Kan Nie villages, forcing approximately 200 residents to flee their homes for safety.
