Thailand continues its handover of Burmese detainees: Junta then forces them into military service
July 3, 2025
HURFOM: On June 30th, 2025, the Thai authorities handed over nearly 100 Burmese citizens who were detained at the Ranong Detention Camp, Thailand to the Burmese authorities in Kaw Thaung Town, Tenasserim Division.
The military junta has been forcing between 100 and 200 of these returned Burmese citizens into military service as conscripts.
“There were 14 transfers in 2024 which included more than 2,000 detainees. We don’t know exactly how many detainees were forcefully collected as conscripts. There must be a process of such forceful collection/conscription but the junta has never released the information so we cannot say exactly how many individuals are affected,” said an official from the FE5 Tanintharyi.
The detainees forcefully collected as conscripts have been sent to the 12th Advanced Military Training School in Pa Loud Town by boat.
Since January, 2025, there have been six transfers of Burmese detainees between the Thai and the Burmese authorities totaling 1,019 people.
