Junta’s soldiers sexually assault Mon women

April 25, 2024

HURFOM: There have been frequent and intense battles between the military junta and the New Mon State Party (AD – Anti Military Dictatorship) in Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State with junta’s troops stationed in monasteries, schools and houses in Mon villages in the area.

In addition to arbitrary arrests and extrajudicial killing, junta’s soldiers have sexually assaulted local Mon women.  According to local sources, in April, 2024, junta soldiers arrested women from a Mon village, sexually assaulted them.  HURFOM can not reveal the name of the village or the victims in order to protect their security and safety.

Sexual assault by the junta’s solider occurred in a Mon village recently. This is not the first time — they’ve been abusing women for decades. Women who are in the village where the soldiers have stationed themselves there must be careful. If possible, leaving the village is the best option. The soldiers have sexually assaulted all women, including single, married, pregnant, and mothers of children,” said the local source.

The Mon women who have been assaulted dare not speak out about their suffering, and are worried about their security and safety. They suffer in silence.

During the Songkran festival, a soldier approached a Mon lady and forced her to drink alcohol. She was frightened and had to take the drink. That kind of abuse is also happening here,” said a friend of the victim.
