Weekly Update: Women and Children Brutally Targeted in Attacks by the Military Junta

Scaled-up attacks by the military junta remain ongoing across the country. Civilians have been forced to carry the burden of a conflict that has been fueled and worsened by the regime for the last three and a half years. The terrorist military constantly and violently disrupts attempts by local people to live peacefully. Among the many wounded and killed are women and children. In September, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) documented nearly a dozen cases of attacks that resulted in the death or injury of a woman or child in target areas of Mon State, Karen State and the Tanintharyi region.

A woman tragically lost her life in an airstrike launched by the junta’s military forces in Hpapun Township, Karen State, even though there were no active clashes in the area, as reported by the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 5.

Junta’s drone attack injures a woman and destroys three houses in Tenasserim

HURFOM: On October 8th, 2024, the 561st light infantry battalion based in Nyaung Pin Kwin village used drone and dropped at least ten bombs on West Ban Law village track, Tenasserim Township, Myeik District, Tenasserim Division.

The drone attack injured 62-year-old Daw Nwe and destroyed three houses.

Junta’s indiscriminate artillery attacks force residents to flee home in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: Since September 9th, 2024, the military junta has been launching indiscriminate artillery attacks to Kaw Bane village track, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State forcing the local villagers to flee their home.

According to the local villagers, the military regiments based in Dhammasa and Ta Ra Nar villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State and the 81st light infantry battalion based in Zar Tha Pyin village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State are responsible for the attacks.

A female passenger injured during attack to an express bus in Thanbyuzayat

HURFOM: At noon on October 7th, 2024, “Shwe Sin Sat Kyar” express bus was shot and attacked on Ye-Thanbyuzayat Highway Road nearby Aye Kabar village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State and a 30-year-old female passenger Ma Nwe Ye Lin was shot and injured during the attack.

Private company to distribute electricity in junta’s full-controlled Chaung Zone Township

HURFOM: After the attempted coup in February 1st, 2024, the military junta has to limit the time for distribution of electricity across the country and the Mon State has been receiving electricity only six hours a day.

The limitation of electricity is getting worse in Mon State this year and the Mon State government has decided to grant a permission of electricity distribution in Chaung Zone Township to a private company in order to distribute electricity 24 hours in the township.

Tons of “young betel nuts” stolen in Ye as it has good price

HURFOM: In Ye Township, Mon State, a “young betel nut” has priced at even 200 MMK at the moment and the high price of the product has created several thefts in the area, according to the betel nut plantation owners.

Now, a “young betel nut” has priced at 200 MMK in Maw Ka Nin village. As it has a good price, the owners have to protect them from thefts. Some owners only got what the thefts left over. There have been too many thefts. We have to be very cautious with them,” said a female plantation owner from Maw Ka Nin village.

Phaung Taw villager arrested by junta

October 8, 2024

HURFOM: On October 1st, 2024, the military junta arrested a 20-year-old man from Phaung Taw village, Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division.

According to a source close to the family, Ko Than Htike was riding his motorbike on the village road when he was stopped by the junta troops hiding beside the road. After checking his mobile phone, the troops accused them of having contact with the People’s Defense Force and arrested him.

Mother and two children injured by junta’s drone attack in Kyikemayaw

HURFOM: On October 5th, 2024, the 81st Light Infantry Battalion based in Zar Tha Pyin village, Karen State used drones to drop bombs on Kyune Kone village, Ta Ra Nar village tract, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State.  There has been no active armed clash in the area to warrant the drone attacks.
