October 9, 2024
HURFOM: In Ye Township, Mon State, a “young betel nut” has priced at even 200 MMK at the moment and the high price of the product has created several thefts in the area, according to the betel nut plantation owners.
“Now, a “young betel nut” has priced at 200 MMK in Maw Ka Nin village. As it has a good price, the owners have to protect them from thefts. Some owners only got what the thefts left over. There have been too many thefts. We have to be very cautious with them,” said a female plantation owner from Maw Ka Nin village.
In 2023, a “young betel nut” only priced at 60 MMK but in August, 2024, the price had increased up to 150 MMK per piece. In this month, October, 2024, a “young betel nut” has already priced at even 200 MMK.
“I just sold all my “young betel nuts” this year. I have no choice as there are lots of thefts. Some plantation owners lost hundred thousands of “young betel nuts”,” said a local resident from Khaw Zar Town, Ye Township.
The production of “young betel nut” has declined this year and it has a good price. As “young betel nut” can be sold in the market, the plantation owners have not wait for their maturity and not store dried betel nuts for sale in Ye Township.
“Last year, I stored dried betel nuts for sale but it priced at only 3,000 MMK per 1.65 kg. I had a huge loss. To avoid the loss, I’ve harvested all “young betel nuts” when it has a good price and sold them,” said a betel nut plantation owner.
The “young betel nuts” from Burma has been exported to China and the Chinese merchants have been buying “young betel nuts” with a good price.
The military junta has announced “martial law” and imposed “curfew” in Ye Township. However, the number of cases of thefts and robberies has significantly been increasing and the junta’s authority has no intension to handle the problems.
