Grandparents and granddaughter injured by junta’s artillery attack in Than Za Yet

HURFOM: On October 12^th, 2024, the 207^th Light Infantry Battalion based in Than Za Yet, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State launched indiscriminate artillery attacks despite no armed clashes in the nearby area. The attacks injured three grandparents and a granddaughter.

Junta arrests eight residents in Paung after accusing them of being PDF members

HURFOM: On October 4^th, 2024, the military junta arrested eight residents from Paung Township, Mon State, accusing them of being the members of the People’s Defense Force.

Since their arrest, there has been no trace of them, according to the sources close to family members.

The junta conducted a “stop and check” on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway Road nearby Zin Kyike Town, Paung Township and arrested 14-year-old Maung Aye Chan and 19-year-old Maung Kaung Myat Soe both from Oak Tan Dar village, accusing them of being PDF members.

Junta’s artillery attack kills a seven-year-old child in Tenasserim

HURFOM: On October 9^th, 2024, the military junta targeted Ta Mote Chone village, Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division with artillery and drone attacks even without having active armed clash in the nearby area and the attacks killed a seven-year-old child and injured at least three villagers.

Weekly Analysis: Social Relief Organizations Targeted by the Military Junta

Across target areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), including Mon State, Karen State and the Tanintharyi region, the junta continues to deploy terror tactics to discourage support for the resistance. Since the attempted coup in Burma on 1 February 2021, the military has used violence as a retaliatory response to the widespread uprisings and condemnation of their failed power bid. Social relief organizations and humanitarian aid workers have been primarily targeted.

On October 9, the junta charged three members of the ‘Pai Shin Mae’ Emergency Rescue group in Thanbyuzayat, Mon State, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The members, including the group’s chairman, U Ye Min Htike, along with Ko Win Kyi and Ko Too, were arrested on the night of September 18 at 9 PM and have since been prosecuted under Section 50(j) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Plantation owners in armed conflict zone halt work

HURFOM: In 2024, rubber garnered a good price in Mon State but most rubber plantation owners in armed conflict zones have had to halt their harvesting due to security concerns.

The Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road part of the 8^th Union Highway Road is currently controlled by the joint resistance forces and the military junta has launched military operations in order to regain control alongside the road.

New species of rice paddy pests inflict high costs on local farmers

HURFOM: Many rice paddy fields in Mudon Township, Mon State have been infected by a new species of pests and many acres of farmland have been destroyed.

Because the pests were discovered late in the rainy season, farmers have not had time to replant new paddy plants and the destruction has resulted in massive cost.

HURFOM: On October 8^th, 2024, the military junta has arrested an 18-year-old young lady Ma Mon Mon from Ward 6, Chaung Taung village, Ye Township, Mon State after accusing her of having contact with the People Defense Force.

Displaced villagers from “Gyaing River” extorted by junta’s troops

HURFOM: Since April, 2024, there has been a military tension in the area of “Gyaing River” and the junta’s regiments based in Dhammasa and Ta Ra Nar villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State and the 81^st light infantry battalion based in Zar Tha Pyin village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State have launched indiscriminate artillery attacks to residential area.
