Ye residents develop night patrols system to protect against rising number of thefts

At about 6 am on September 15, 2023, Thanbyuzayat residents found a man hanging from electrical wires. He appears to have died from an electric shock while trying to steal electrical cable wire from the utility pole in Aung Ku Toe Ward, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.
“He’s a part-time worker from the EPC (Electricity Providing Committee). He tried to steal wire from the utility pole last night, and died from an electric shock. His body was found in the morning,” said a Thanbyuzayat resident.

HURFOM | Week Two, September 2023
Civilians living in Southeastern Burma continue to exist with the threat of attack by the Burma Army at any time. The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) is hearing ongoing reports of fear and terror as villagers ‘dare not return’ to the places they once called home. Over the last week, more human rights violations occurred, including destruction of property, torture, and indiscriminate firing.
The military junta is targeting supporters of the resistance movement. The illegal regime has failed to grab power in their attempted coup and continues to be engaged in a senseless, unearned bid for legitimacy.

A Burmese military unit established their base in Ya Ngae village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division and opened a check-point.
They use the check-point to extort 5,000 MMK from every villager who wants to pass through, locals reported HURFOM.

HURFOM: At about 3 pm on September 12, 2023, the local military junta launched an artillery attack on Kyaung Yaw village, Ye Township, Mon State and injured six villagers.
The People’s Defense Force attacked the 583rd Kyaung Yaw based Light Infantry Battalion at 2 pm and the battalion responded by targeting the village. Houses and the market were damaged, with villagers sustaining injuries.

HURFOM: According to IDP (internally displaced persons) support and rescue team members,
between March and August, 2023, more than 6,000 villagers from Long Lone Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division fled from their homes due to armed conflict.
The military junta began operations in Long Lone Township on March 3, 2023 and they launched artillery attacks on villages, burnt down homes and arrested villagers. Nearly 6,500 residents from Out Kyouk Wat, Kyouk Wat Pyin and Nyaung Pyin villages had to flee from their homes.

HURFOM: The military junta has again put restrictions on political prisoners detained in the Kyikemayaw Central Prison in Mon State and the Dawei Prison in Tenasserim. Prison authorities banned or restricted family members or others from sending food, visits and access to health services.
In July and August, 2023, the military junta imposed other restrictions, following a review of prisons.
