Junta’s army arrests plantation workers and extorts them

HURFOM: In the second week of June, 2025, three family members from R Yu Taung village, Ye Township, Mon State enroute to their rubber plantation, were arrested by a local regiment of the military junta. The regiment demanded three million MMK or they would be sent to military training for conscripts.

HURFOM: On June 1st, 2025, the driver of an ambulance picking up a patient from the Hpa-An General Hospital, Hpa-An Town, Karen State was arrested and the vehicle seized by the military junta. Former Health Worker U Kyaw Soe Win, Health Worker Daw Zin Maw Nine, her mother Daw Than Than May, and her younger Brother Ko Htet Htet Tun were all released on June 16th.

HURFOM: Communities in Kyaukkyi and Mu Townships of Bago Region are once again under siege as junta forces continue their indiscriminate attacks using drones and heavy artillery. According to reports received by HURFOM from field sources and the KNU’s Kler Lwee Htu District, at least three civilians, including an 11-year-old child, were injured. Multiple religious sites and homes were also damaged.
Arresting owners of unlicensed vehicles creates financial loss for plantation owners

Weekly Analysis: Refugee Rights are Human Rights

On International Refugee Day, observed on June 20, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) condemned all forms of violence against refugees and conflict-affected communities. Additionally, we called for immediate action to address their struggle. In targeted areas of HURFOM, including Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi Region, conflict-affected communities are facing life-threatening challenges posed by the military junta, which is actively undermining their fundamental freedoms, including their basic human rights.
Dozens of cases documented by HURFOM illustrate a pattern of indiscriminate firing, targeting displaced communities who are sheltering from the violence that has consumed their daily lives. Since the earthquake at the end of March 2025, the junta has launched more than 920 airstrikes and artillery attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 590 people, including many in Mon and Karen States and the Tanintharyi Region, where HURFOM is actively working. Even more troubling is that numerous attacks took place during the junta’s claimed “ceasefire” period.
