Junta forcefully seizes residential land, divides it into land plots and resells them

HURFOM: In March 2025, the Mon State Chief Minister and the military forcefully seized 11.239 acres of land in Hline and Aye Thar Yar Wards, Mawlamyine, Mon State, and removed hundreds of houses constructed on the land. The authority did not compensate the landowners.
The junta then leveled the land, constructed new roads, and installed light poles. The junta said it would establish a new residential project called “Hline Yadanar New City.” The junta newly divided the land into land plots and resold them, residents reported to HURFOM.
“We bought the land with a contract. But the military and the Chief Minister said our land was an illegal residence and ordered us to move out. We had to demolish even schools and religious buildings. Now, they created new land plots on that land and resold them with 140 or 150 million MMK per land plot,” said one Mawlamyine resident.
The residents claimed that they got a LaNa/39 (residential permit) from the Mawlamyine Municipal Department but the junta arbitrarily labeled the homes as illegal residences.
The residents who were forcefully removed from the land face accommodation problems and they have to take temporary shelters in nearby monasteries and religious buildings.
