Junta’s air assault injures three IDPs

HURFOM: The military junta launched two air assaults on a shelter for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State. The first attack took place at 12 pm on February 19 and the second occurred at 09:30 am on February 20, 2023.
The three IDPs including a 14-year-old child were injured in the attack. In total, more than half a dozen innocent civilians in Kaw Ka Rate Township were injured or killed in the attacks.

Fourth Week of February 2023
HURFOM: Across Southeastern Burma, civilians remain in crisis. Internally displaced people (IDPs) who fled their villages in Karen State were again attacked by the junta while seeking safety. On February 19, around midnight, the junta air force shelled an area where IDPs temporarily sheltered in the southern part of Kawkareik, Brigade 6 of the Karen National Union (KNU). At least three IDPs, including a child, were injured. A local service provider team member confirmed that three individuals, Naw Hla Htwe, age 36, Saw Pha Kyaw Do, age 44, and a 14-year-old girl, were struck in the attack.

HURFOM: After imposing martial law in Ye Township, Mon State, the General Administration Department has banned local residents from going outside between 6 pm and 6 am.
The military junta has also issued a new restriction on “the time of riding motorbike”.
A local villager told HURFOM that the military junta will only allow the riding of motorbikes between 8 am and 4 pm in Ye Township.

HURFOM: Kaw Dut village has garnered the attention of the Burmese army since the junta-appointed village Administrator San Win was killed. He was replaced by an individual named Ah Nine.
Burmese soldiers are now present in the village very often, arresting villagers and extorting money from them.
On February 19, 2023, an explosion occurred at Kaw Cha village, Kaw Dut village track, Lamine Sub-township, Ye Township in Mon State.

HURFOM: There have been frequent and prolonged power cuts in Mudon and Thanbyuzayat Townships, in Mon State, forcing businesses to temporarily shut down.
Small businesses owners can not afford their own generators and rely on State provided electricity.

HURFOM: On January 31, 2023, the military junta announced that civilians and government staff have the right to keep and bear arms.
This new measure will be limited to persons 18 years of age and older, patriots (which is undefined) and those who do not have a criminal record. The process involves completing an application obtained from one’s State/Division police force. A final decision on such applications will be made by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The new measure is not being well received by many citizens. Critics note that only those who are pro-military are likely to benefit.

HURFOM: On February 14, 2023, the owner of a gas station in Maw Ka Nin village, Ye Township, in Mon State was arrested by the local 106th Artillery Battalion.
His family members have lost contact with him as of today.

HURFOM: The military junta has reinforced their security forces at the entrance and outlet of Kyaikmayaw Town, in Mon State since the last week of December, 2022.
Soldiers at the checkpoint between Kyaikmayaw Town and Kyune Yaw village, in Kyaikmayaw Township are now maintaining a photo record of every vehicle and passengers are being interrogated as they pass through the gate, report local sources.

Third Week of February 2023
The year 2023 has continued to be marked with violence against the people in Burma. In Mon State, Karen State, and Tanintharyi region, civilians are relentlessly being attacked by artillery shells and the bullets of the junta’s indiscriminate firing. Destruction of property, including the burning of villages, is ongoing. Thousands more are being forced to flee their homes daily as military impunity, and a lack of international action only encourage the junta to commit more atrocity crimes.
