Frequent and prolonged power cuts hurting businesses in Mon State

HURFOM: There have been frequent and prolonged power cuts in Mudon and Thanbyuzayat Townships, in Mon State, forcing businesses to temporarily shut down.
Small businesses owners can not afford their own generators and rely on State provided electricity.
“The interruptions of power are very long. We can’t finish our orders. Our business has to use high voltage electricity and we can’t afford a big generator. The State-sponsored electricity is just available at night. This is a problem for our workers. So I’ve temporarily stopped my business,” said a welding factory owner based in Mudon Township.
Since the coup, the military junta can not provide enough electricity and power cuts have persisted for two or three days in some areas.
“Politics is unsettled and the economy is declining. Then, there is a power cut. So how can we make a living? We have to stop our business, we then suffer starvation,” said a furniture shop owner from Mudon Township.
Hotels, factories or private clinics that have their own power generators are starting to charge high service fees to offset their rising operating costs.
