February 20, 2023

HURFOM: On February 14, 2023, the owner of a gas station in Maw Ka Nin village, Ye Township, in Mon State was arrested by the local 106th  Artillery Battalion.

His  family members have lost contact with him as of today.

He was accused of connecting with the People’s Defense Forces and was arrested on February 14. He was taken by members of the Battalion at his gas station. The soldiers told him to come with them to answer some questions. His family members lost contact with him after that. His wife has made inquiries,  but his whereabouts and details of his arrest are unknown, said a Maw Ka Nin villager who is close to the victim.

The victim is 52-year-old Nai Tint Way,  and he operates  the  “Yadanar Marm” gas station located near Maw Ka Nin village. He is a wealthy business person and serves as a  member of the Board of Trustees with the Maw Ka Nin Monastery.

Concern is growing for the wellbeing of Nai Tint Way, because the arrest and killing of innocent civilians in Ye Township has been on the rise since the declaration of martial law on February 2.

There is speculation that members of the  Burmese army have arrested local business persons to extort money from them.

“Villagers have been arrested at their homes without any reason. The military has conducted more and more arrests this month,” said one villager.

According to local sources, at least four villagers were arrested just this week in Maw Ka Nin village.
