Two innocent villagers arrested and tortured by junta council soldiers: 70 households flee in fear

HURFOM: The Junta troops attacked the People’s Defense Armed Forces and arbitrarily arrested and tortured the local residents in townships of the Tenasserim Region.
According to a HURFOM field team report from May 9th, an eyewitness confirmed that two men from the village of Wae Yit village in Thayet-Chaung Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Region, were stopped and searched. They were then arrested under false pretences and beaten by the junta troops.

HURFOM: The junta’s troops have been launching indiscriminate attacks in Kaw Hlar, Mi Galon and surrounding villages in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State.
The battle between the Burmese military and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army and the People Defense Forces has been intensifying in Kaw Ka Rate Township. The military has responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks and air assaults.

HURFOM: Since the last week of April, 2023, the number of COVID-19 patients in Mon State has started to rise. According to the Ministry of Health, which is controlled by the junta, more than 40 patients were detected from April 26 to May 5, 2023.
“The COVID-19 infection rate is increasing again but people are having a normal life. They are not wearing masks. The Ministry of Health hasn’t released any public health instructions,” said a resident from Thanbyuzayat Township.

HURFOM: Water resources are scarce in Mon State and there are no aid or charity groups able to provide water to residents in need.
Mawlamyine, Bilin, Paung, Mudon, Thanbyuzayat and Kyaikmayaw Townships all are experiencing water shortages, and residents have to buy water for their daily use.

HURFOM: On May 6, at around 9:00 pm, the Junta military council base fired several artillery mortars into the village of Ah Lu Lay village, Bilin Township, and at least one woman and one man were injured, according to the ground news team.
“Artillery mortar shells burst into the village, and U Nay Myo Kyaw’s arm and Daw Khin San Yi’s face were badly impacted by the artillery shells,” said eyewitnesses.

HURFOM: On May 6, in Kawthaung District # in the Southern Tanintharyi Region residents said that a group of junta forces, including the GAD and military officers, seized the property of a local businessman in Bokpyin Township.
The victim, U Aung Zaw Oo, is believed to be an anti-regime activist and a local businessman from Kamar-Chaung village. His family opened a gas station a few years ago.

HURFOM: Although there was no armed conflict in the area, the Junta council launched airstrikes repeatedly bombing a village in Ye Township, Mon State.
The village was bombed twice on the night of May 7th and then again in the morning of May 8th.
The sudden aerial attack resulted in at least 8 local villagers being seriously injured, 3 were in critical condition. It is estimated that 500 villagers have fled their homes.

HURFOM: Artillery shells exploded at a brick factory near the exit of Kaw Ka Rate town, in Karen State, at around 6:00 am, on May 6, 2023. According to local network reporters, one civilian was killed and 6 other workers were injured.
According to the 35-year-old Saw T__ N___, the Junta’s military troops based in the hills on the eastern side of Kaw Ka Rate town were firing artillery indiscriminately at local Karen villages.

HURFOM: Despite the absence of armed conflicts, Junta battalions without interruption are launching artillery attacks purposefully targeting local villages. Women and children are being killed or injured.
On May 5th , the Junta military’s 97th Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) based in Kaw Ka Rate Township in Karen State began firing artillery rounds at around 7:30 am. A 58-year-old local woman from Maung-Ma-Ywa-Thit village located in the southern part of the city was injured by the attack.
