Junta’s air assault kills teacher and three students

HURFOM: On September 7, 2023, the military junta launched an air assault on Htee Wall Hta village, Dwel Low Township, Mu Taw District, Karen State that killed a teacher and three students.

The deceased included  56-year-old teacher Saw Hpar Dar, two male students Saw Al Mu and  Saw Bo Gyi,  and one girl, Naw Htee Ku Phaw.  The three children  ranged  in ages 13 to 16.

Artillery attack kills one and injures two in Pu Law

HURFOM: On September 9, 2023, the military junta attacked with any provocation  Latt Ku village, in Pu Law Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division.

The attack killed a man and injured two villagers including a child.

A weekly update by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) on the situation on the ground. Summary data includes Mon State, Karen State, and Tanintharyi region.

As another ASEAN summit came and passed, little progress was made on the human rights situation in Burma. While the regional bloc condemns the junta’s behavior, they also enable it by permitting the murderous regime to attend meetings and training, including on anti-terrorism and security – of which the Burma Army has no place. The lives of innocent people are at risk, yet regional and global entities, including the UN, make conscious choices to stand with dictators rather than those of the pro-democracy movement.

Junta bans ambulance crew from providing service at night

September 8, 2023

HURFOM: The military junta has issued a curfew in Tenasserim Town, Tenasserim Division  banning people from going outside between 8 pm and 5 am. But there were no special restrictions issued  for ambulances.

However, effective August 25, junta’s check-points in Tenasserim Division have started to ban ambulances traveling at night.

Junta establishes more restrictions on movement of people: Kan Bauk villagers worried

HURFOM: For more than 2 and half years,  the junta has had check-points in the Kan Bauk Area, Yebyu Township, in Tenasserim Division and they have tightened their security.

Since the attempted coup took place, the junta has put in place more and more restrictions on the movement of people creating problems and inconveniences to local villagers.

Three civilians sustain injuries from drone-bomb explosion in Bilin

HURFOM: On September 1, 2023, a bomb carried by a drone was dropped and exploded nearby Dough Yat village, Bilin Township, in Mon State.

Three civilians sustained minor injuries, according to the local rescue team.

Military refuses to move from monastery despite request from Abbot and villagers

September 7, 2023

HURFOM: Since August, 2023, a military unit has been stationed in the village monastery in Kan Taw Ni village, Thaton Township, in Mon State.

Villagers said the Chair of Township Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee (High-ranking Buddhist Monks Association formed by the State) requested the military move out of the monastery,  but the request was denied.

Man sustains serious injuries from stepping on a landmine

HURFOM: On August 29, 2023, a local man from Ka Nyin Chaung village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine and sustained serious injuries.

More than 2,000 villagers flee from their homes in Bilin

HURFOM: On September 4, 2023, more than 2,000 villagers from four villages of Bilin Township, Mon State fled from their homes and took shelter in nearby villages when an armed clash broke out in their area.
