Junta arrests eight residents in Paung after accusing them of being PDF members

HURFOM: On October 4th, 2024, the military junta arrested eight residents from Paung Township, Mon State, accusing them of being the members of the People’s Defense Force.
Since their arrest, there has been no trace of them, according to the sources close to family members.
The junta conducted a “stop and check” on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway Road nearby Zin Kyike Town, Paung Township and arrested 14-year-old Maung Aye Chan and 19-year-old Maung Kaung Myat Soe both from Oak Tan Dar village, accusing them of being PDF members.
The junta subsequently arrested four other villagers, including 16-year-old Maung Thant Zin from Oak Tan Dar village, 46-year-old Ko Thein Nine from Nyaung Gone Gyi village and 63-year-old U Sein Taung Kyi from Thel Gone village.
“Their family members inquired about them at the police station and the police replied they knew nothing and urged them to make an inquiry with the military. The family members asked “Which regiment” and the police replied “the Thaton regiment”. They went to Thaton and asked again but the Thaton regiment said they knew nothing. The family members have been worrying about the lives of their children,” said an Oak Tan Dar resident.
The junta claimed those arrested had two rifles, 40 bullets and two magazines. Villagers said those arrested were not related to the PDF and they are plantation workers and fishermen.
On September 2nd, 2024, the junta also arrested four young men who were drinking alcohol at the village market of Tha Byu Chaung village, Paung Township under the same accusation and they have also not been released.
