HRUFOM: On February 28th, 2024, the “Moe Kaung” Bridge located on the Yangon – Mawlamyine Highway Road nearby Moe Kaung village, Thaton Township, Mon State was blown up by a mine. Two houses and two shops were also destroyed and a 30-year-old man was injured during the explosion.

Arbitrary Arrests and Unlawful Detainment by the Military Junta On the Rise in Southeastern Burma as Women and Children Are Targeted
Three years since the attempted coup in Burma was marked on 1 February 2024. Thousands have been killed and injured, and many more remain imprisoned on falsified and unjust charges. The economic situation has spiralled due to the junta’s failed policies and has consequently led to inflation, with prices soaring far beyond the means of many households. In addition, social services, including health care and education, have been eroded through corruption and attacks.
In a statement released by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM), calls were made to end these attacks immediately and for the international community, including donors and policymakers, to focus on what is next to support human rights defenders and pro-democracy advocates. These stakeholders must engage with local civil society organizations on what steps they can take to ensure they are on the right side of history.

HURFOM: In the last week of February, 2024, a schoolteacher who joined the “Civil Disobedience Movement – CDM” and a male vendor from Kyike Hto Township, Mon State were arrested by the military junta.
On February 21st, 35-year-old CDM schoolteacher, Daw Phyu Phyu Khine from Mell Yone Gyi village was arrested by the junta at the “Lat Pya” check-point in Kyike Hto City.

HRUFOM: On February 25th, 2024, the 409th Light Infantry Battalion based in Win Tar Ban village, Bilin Township, Mon State, recklessly shot and injured a villager.
According to local sources and the Thaton District Karen National Union, junta troops shot 33-year-old Saw Cha Wall near the “Naung Ka Tote” stream. He sustained an injury to his left elbow.

HURFOM: On February 23rd, 2024, the joint revolutionary forces attacked the soldiers and police forces stationed at the check-point near Mote Pa Lin village, Kyiek Hto Township, Mon State.
During the armed clash, two civilians and a 40-year-old female street vendor were shot and sustained injuries.

HURFOM: The military junta launched indiscriminate artillery attacks in Tha Yet Chaung Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division forcing residents from three villages to flee their homes, report local sources.
On February 20th, 2024, the People’s Defense Force attacked a military check-point near Win Wa Bridge, Tha Yet Chaung Township. The junta responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks on nearby villages on February 22nd.

HURFOM: Motorists using the Ye – Thanbyuzayat Highway Road, Ye Township, Mon State have reported to HURFOM, that they have been extorted by armed groups who control part of the road.
The armed group employs “stop and checks’ between Ka Nin Ka Maw and Aung Thar Yar villages, Ye Township, Mon State in order to extort money from motorists. Extortion has ranged from 40,000 to 100,000 MMK per vehicle.
