HURFOM, Third Week of January 2024

Over the last week, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) received two devastating updates on the ill-treatment of political prisoners who died from preventable causes. Both young men died after failing to receive immediate emergency assistance. HURFOM condemned the response by the junta-backed medical staff who failed to take steps that would have saved the lives of the two victims. According to the rights monitoring group, the Political Prisoners Network – Myanmar (PPNM), seventeen political prisoners died in 2023 because their medical symptoms were ignored and treated too late by junta-staffed personnel.

Junta tightens security in Ye Town: Residents worry

HURFOM: On December 31st, 2023, the joint revolutionary forces in Southern Ye Township, Mon State announced they would accelerate military action in Ye Township and the rest of Mon State.

In response, the military junta deployed more troops and tightened security at the entrance and exit of Ye Town, according to the locals.

Two young boys injured by junta’s artillery attack in Thein Za Yet

January 19, 2024

HURFOM: On January 16th, 2024, the military junta targeted Thone Kwa village, Thein Za Yet Town, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State with multiple artillery attacks that injured two young boys.

The 310th Artillery Regiment based in Thane Za Ye launched at least five artillery attacks targeting Kyauk Pone Gyi and Thone Kwa villages. 17-year-old Maung Zaw Zaw Aung and 19-year-old Maung Hla Myoe Htwe sustained injuries to their backs and thighs.

The HumanRights Foundation of Monland Condemns the Treatment of Political Prisoners in Military Custody

The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) condemns the ongoing ill-treatment of political prisoners, which has resulted in death by the military junta. Over the last week, HURFOM reported on two cases of critically ill detained political prisoners who both died due to a lack of access to adequate and reliable medical treatment. The thousands of activists and rights defenders unlawfully detained across the country are evidence of the erosion of the rule of law and the sabotaging of fundamental rights and freedoms. The junta has failed to prioritize their health and well-being and must be held accountable for their deaths.

Second political prisoner dies due to improper medical care in Kyikemayaw Prison

HURFOM: On January 16th, 2024, a political prisoner and former firefighter and who contributed to civil disobedience movement (CDM) in Kyikemayaw Central Prison, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State has died due to improper medical care, according to a statement by the Political Prisoner Network Myanmar – PPNM.

Displaced children unable to sit for grade promotion exams

HRUFOM: The grade promotion exams within government schools will start in the second week of February, 2024, but displaced children from 20 villages in the Chaung Hna Kwa area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State are facing difficulties to get official approval to take the exam.

There are approximately 40 displaced children in Kyune Yaw village and school teachers from government schools are teaching them at the moment.

Political prisoner dies due to insufficient health care in Kyikemayaw

HURFOM: On January 12th, 2024, a political prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment in Kyikemayaw Central Prison, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State died due to insufficient health care, according to the statement released by the Political Prisoner Network Myanmar (PPNM) and other sources familiar with the case.

43-year-old Ko Yar Shin aka Har Shin was beaten and tortured in the military interrogation center and sustained damage to his internal organs. His health further deteriorated in November, 2023 but he did not receive appropriate health care from the prison authorities.

Junta’s soldiers arrest and extort villagers in Mudon Township

January 17, 2024

HRUFOM: Local people have reported to HURFOM that junta soldiers located at a check-point on Abit – Kha Lell Da Gon Tie Road in Set Thwe village tract, Mudon Township, Mon State have been arresting and extorting money from local villagers and plantation workers.

Two 38-year-old Abit villagers were arrested while tapping rubber trees in their plantation, reported a resident.

Villagers arrested by military regiment released

January 16, 2024

HURFOM: On December 27, 2023, a military regiment launched an operation in Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division and arrested ten residents from five villages.

I was hiding in the monastery when the military regiment entered the village but they found and arrested me. My hands were tied behind my back and I was beaten during the arrest. I was forced to accompany them and carry their food and things,” said a villager who has recently been released.

Junta’s soldiers threaten villagers: Told not to share news of human rights violations on social media

January 16, 2024

HURFOM: In early 2024, residents from Mell Ta Yoe and nearby villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State had to flee their homes due to armed conflict and military tension. The junta deployed more troops to villages in Kyikemayaw Township and the Burmese soldiers were arresting, extorting and torturing villagers. Junta’s troops burgled houses of displaced persons and stole valuable things. The soldiers restricted freedom of movement and limited transportation of food and goods.
