Unknown armed group extort villagers in Long Lone

HURFOM: Since the first week of April, 2024, an unknown armed group called “Modern Punks” has been extorting households in Got Inn village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division, local villagers reported HURFOM.
Each household has to pay a ransom ranging from 50,000 MMK to 100,000 MMK.
“The group has collected the money depending on the household condition and occupation. If a household has a family member abroad, it has to pay 50,000 MMK. If a household has a car, it has to pay 100,000 MMK. The group has also threatened some households to provide them with monthly financial support,” said a local source.
The group has intimidated villagers threatening them to leave, if they don’t want to give them the money.
“They’ve just extorted the villagers without any reason,” said a villager.
The “Modern Punks” is a very new armed group which was established in March, 2024.
