An express bus attacked in Bilin; one killed and four injured

HURFOM: On April 4, 2024, an express bus struck a landmine and was shot at on the Yangon – Mawlamyine Highway near Shwe Yaung Pya village, Bilin Township, Mon State. The driver’s assistant was killed and four passengers were injured.
29-year-old Ko Zin Ko Lat was killed on the spot and three men and a woman were injured.

HURFOM: It has been discovered that four villagers from Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State who disappeared for nearly a month were killed by “Taung Nyo Column” of the 27th Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army.
The group took responsibility for the murders in a statement made on March 20th, 2024.

HURFOM: In Chaung Zone Township, Mon State, junta-appointed Administrators are extorting 8,000 MMK from every young man who has turned 18 years old. Administrators claim the money is to hire substitutes for those not want to submit to compulsory military service.
“The Administrator said we must pay 1.5 million MMK every month to support substitutes for compulsory military service. First, they collected money from each household and now, every young man who has already turned 18 years old has to pay more money,” said a resident from Ka Log village, Chaung Zone Township.

HURFOM: On April 2nd, 2024, the military junta’s artillery regiment based in Southern Ye Township, Mon State targeted Ka Log Gyi village with indiscriminate artillery attacks even though there had been no active armed clashes in the area.
The junta assumes “Ye Ba Lue” and other revolutionary forces are active near Ka Log Gyi village and in response the 316th Artillery Regiment launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on nearby areas.

HURFOM: After revolutionary forces attack by drones, on the “Ma Hwelve Taung” Check-point, located on the border of Mon State and Tenasserim Division, the military junta launched air assaults on Yebyu Township, on March 29, 2024.
The air assault injured a villager and destroyed a house. More than 1,000 residents from Kywe Tha Lin, Log Tie, Yar Phu and Ah Lae Sa Khan villages had to flee their homes.

HURFOM, First Week of April 2024
At the end of March 2024, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) released our monthly overview inclusive of several worrying observations, including the impacts of forced conscription and the rise in crime, violence against women and the targeting of political prisoners within junta-run jails. These concerns have only heightened within the first week of April. The military continues to deceive the international community by concealing the fact that prisoners are being killed after inhumane torture.

HURFOM: On March 31st, 2024, two villagers from Sit Pyell village were arrested by the junta’s troops who were accompanied by a “Pu Saw Htee ” group stationed at Kyauk Ne Maw village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.
According to the Kyauk Ne Maw residents, 20-year-old Ko Win Kyaw Thu and 26-year-old Ko Ngae Ngae were arrested at the entrance of the village.

HURFOM: On March 27th and 28th, 2024, the junta’s military, air force and navy launched both air assaults and artillery attacks twice on Dhammasa village, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. Approximately 300 houses were burnt down and more than 6,000 residents had to flee.
One man was killed and four other villagers were injured during the attack.

HURFOM: On March 16th, 2024, two political prisoners who were serving their sentence in the Dawei Prison, Tenasserim Division were removed from the prison by the junta’s forces. One was killed and the other one has disappeared.
The junta accused Ko Win Thi Ha and Ko Min Thu of contacting the People’s Defense Forces by phone in prison and took them outside of the prison, ostensibly to conduct an investigation. On March 23rd, 2024, the prison authority informed Ko Win Thi Ha’s family that he tried to run away, and was shot and killed.

HURFOM: In the last week of March, 2024, military junta’s troops entered and stationed themselves in Ta Ra Nar and Kaw Tut villages, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. Their presence frightened villagers and led to 4,000 people leaving their homes.
After the revolutionary forces attacked and took control of the Kaw Bane Police Station in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State, more than 100 troops entered Ta Ra Nar and Kaw Tut villages via the Mawlamyine – Kha Yone Gu route.
