Drug abuse in Mon State is uncontrollable

HURFOM: “I sent my son to the New Mon State Party Centre to receive addiction treatment. He’s cured and returned home but it didn’t last even for a month. He’s abusing drugs again. Now, I have to let him do what he wants,” said a disappointed mother from a village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.
Another mother explained what was happening to her son at this time.

HURFOM, Fourth Week of November 2023
In Southeastern Burma, violence remains targeted against civilians who are living in parts of the country where conflict is intensifying. Among the most vulnerable are women and children, who comprise the majority of those displaced, and the last week included the beginning of the ‘16 Day Campaign to End Gender-Based Violence,’ which is acknowledged by many human rights groups in Burma. During these challenging times of turmoil and uncertainty, the commitment to ending gendered violence is affirmed, and the work to spread awareness is ongoing. For example, the Karen Women’s Organization shared their theme, including a call to create a community free from violence against women.

HURFOM: On November 16, 2023, the Southeast Military Command based near Ya Khine Gone village, Mawlamyine Township, Mon State was attacked. In response, the military junta tightened security in Mawlamyine and began to carry out stop and checks throughout the city including downtown wards.

HURFOM: Since the first of November, 2023, the military junta has launched frequent artillery attacks, day and night targeting villages in Kyike Hto Township, Mon State. The Thaton District Karen National Union stated these attacks have forced more than 3,000 villagers to flee from their homes. In addition, the attacks on many villages in Thaton Township, pushes the internally displaced numbers to as many as 150,000 villagers.

HURFOM: Since November 15, 2023, the military junta has launched artillery attacks on Kyaung Nake village, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim. They are also scouting the area using drones and sometimes the drones drop bombs, reported the local villagers.
