Farmers afraid of being attacked during grain harvest season

November 23, 2023

HURFOM: Since November 15, 2023, the military junta has launched artillery attacks on Kyaung Nake village, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim. They are also scouting the area using drones and sometimes the drones drop bombs, reported the local villagers.

Drone bombing occurred five times in October and twice so far in November.

The drone is flying overhead and is indiscriminate about who they target. We have to hide under trees and houses. We can’t request the military not to use drones during the harvest season. We’re in big trouble,” said a farmer.

At least five workers work on a one-acre farm harvesting grain. These farmers worry the military junta can mistake them for revolutionary forces and attack them using a drone.

This year, most villagers must farm under the danger of artillery attack. Now, it’s time to harvest the grain, but we are worried we won’t be able to do the work in time,” said a farmer from Kyaung Nake village.

Kyaung Nake village is just two miles away from Pu Law Town where the military junta has frequently attacked the village with artillery weapons.

On November 20, 2023 the junta launched three artillery attacks on the village. The shells dropped near houses and near plantations but did not explode.  The shells are still buried in the soil, reported local villagers.
