HURFOM: On November 20, 2023, the military junta launched an artillery attack targeting Ward 2, in Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State.  According to an official from a local rescue team, the attack

killed two civilians and injured one.

The 97th Light Infantry Battalion launched at least four artillery attacks in the evening of November 20. One of the artillery shells exploded on a house near “Myo Daw” monastery in Ward 2.

The explosion killed 70-year-old grandpa U Tun Yin and 15-year-old grandchild Maung Phyo Min.  U Tun Yin son sustained an injury to his right thigh.

There was no armed clash, but they still shot artillery weapons. The grandpa and his grandchild died on the spot. The grandchild was using his phone while the grandpa was sleeping. Their bodies were cremated this morning,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.

The injured victim was sent to Kaw Ka Rate District General Hospital for further treatment by a local rescue team.

The 97th Battalion is frightened that revolutionary forces will attack their base,  so they launch indiscriminate artillery attacks nearly every night, reported local people.

According to the 2024 census, Kaw Ka Rate Town has a population of more than 40,000. Due to the constant and indiscriminate artillery attacks by the junta, more than 50% of the population has moved to Hpa-an and other places.
