Junta’s artillery attack kills 8-Grade student in Tenasserim

HURFOM, First Week of November
Civilians continue to be caught in the crossfire of violence deployed by the military junta. By the end of October 2023, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) reported that at least 68 civilians had been arrested, five detained, four injured, and 15 killed. The fieldworkers based in HURFOM target areas of Mon State, Karen State and Tanintharyi region are reporting on the daily horrors committed by the junta with impunity.
On November 1st, an eighth-grade student who was being treated for medical treatment after being hit with artillery fire attacked by the military junta in Tanintharyi Township died two weeks after he was struck. Around midday on October 14th, without any fighting, the military junta troops stationed on Lay Thar Mountain in Taninthayi launched artillery weapons. One of the shells hit a 16-year-old, eight-year-old grade student, Mg Pyae Day Won, and a male family member from Tamok Choung.

HURFOM: Due to the political crisis in Burma, the use of illicit drugs in Mon State has risen sharply. Most youth in Mon State are addicted to illicit drugs and many are not interested in ethnic and social affairs, claimed a leader from a youth organization in Mon State.
“Most young people in the villages are addicted to drugs. It’s really difficult to organize them to join a youth organization,” said the leader.

HURFOM: On October 17, 2023, a military unit entered Kyauk Kha Mount village, in Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tenasserim and destroyed and torched a house and arrested a Kyauk Kha Mount resident and a Ya Ngae resident.

HURFOM: On October 28, 2023, a military unit entered villages in Na Bu Lel area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division and killed four villagers and torched five houses.
The military unit consisted of more than 100 troops and they left the Na Bu Lel area on October 22. However, they re-entered the area again on October 24 and launched military operations targeting Lel Shaung, Pa Ra Dat and Htein Gyi villages.

HURFOM: On October 22, 2023, three young boys all aged approximately 15 years old, were arrested by the military junta at the check-point near Nan Taung village, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division, according to the local sources.

HURFOM: In the third week of October, 2023, four residents from Kyike Hto Township, Mon State were injured by artillery attacks launched by the military junta, according to the statement of the Thaton District Karen National Union.
On October 19, the 2nd Light Infantry Battalion based in Kyike Hto Township launched an artillery attack on Mae Yone village and injured a 27-year-old woman.

HURFOM: On October 26, 2023, two men from Min Yat village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division were arrested by the military junta.
About 50 troops entered Min Yat village via a jungle route and arrested 40-year-old Ko Aung Kyaw Soe and 17-year-old Ko Thar Thar, according to a local source.

The Military Junta Is Increasingly Manipulating the Rule of Law in
Burma to Target Civilians and Pro-Democracy Forces
HURFOM
Throughout October, the regime routinely targeted civilians in an ongoing campaign to undermine their fundamental freedoms. The people are resilient and have not given up their fight for democracy. The Burma Army knows that they are losing the war they have waged, and in response, they have scaled up attacks to try and instill terror and fear. The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) remains committed to documenting the assaults and attacks indicative of military impunity.
While carrying out these horrendous attacks, they are trying to present an illusion to the international community that the situation in the country is normal when, in reality, it is anything but the contrary. The junta invited government officials, diplomats, ethnic revolution organizations, and even NGOs to an event commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). The NCA is not a successful pathway or platform to peace in Burma, but in their attempts to appear legitimate and committed to ‘peace,’ the junta held a lavish ceremony.
