HURFOM: On May 8, 2023, the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and the People Defense Forces attacked the 97th  Light Infantry Battalion based at Kaw Ka Rate Town, Karen State.

Since that attack, the military junta has continuously been arresting residents.  As of today, about 40 residents were arrested and detained.

After the battalion was attacked, the military junta blocked the road and arrested residents. They also arrested political prisoners who were recently released from the prison. Now, we’ve received 30 names of those arrested. They’re not allowed to meet with their family members,” said a Kaw Ka Rate resident.

Local businesspersons, members and officials of the emergency and rescue teams, the former government staff who had been involved in the civil disobedience movement”, and those who protested the military coup as well as  political prisoners who were recently released from the prison,  are among the 40 detainees.

The military junta is also arresting residents fleeing from their homes,” said a resident.
