HURFOM: In the Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division, the military junta banned riding two wheel motorbikes from January 25, 2023, only allowing three wheel motorbikes for travel and transport.
Villagers who could not afford to transform their motorbikes into three wheel motorbikes set up two baskets at the rear of their motorbikes and use them for daily purposes, in the hopes that they could evade the ban.
The military junta responded by arresting individuals riding these motorbikes and beat the riders. Villagers are now left with transportation options.
“The soldiers stopped my bike and slapped my face. They also seized my phone. Then, they threatened, “Just tell people in your village. If they are going around with motorbikes with baskets at the rear, they all will be shot and killed”,said a motorbike rider.
On May 12, 2023, a villager went to the market with his motorbike with baskets at the rear and the soldiers stopped and interrogated him.
“Everyone uses motorbikes with two baskets at the rear so I went to the market with that kind of motorbike. The soldiers stopped and interrogated me. They said I was released for the first time but next time, I’ll be arrested and my bike will be seized,” said a villager.
Even though the military junta has banned riding two-wheel motorbikes in the Kan Bauk area, the Burmese soldiers and the pro military militia are riding their motorbikes openly and freely.
