Police and soldiers responsible for killing and injuring citizens, and destroying property

HURFOM: The last days of February and early March have seen increasing violence committed by police and soldiers on citizens of Mawlamyine.

On February 28, security forces killed a 21-year-old man and 30 people were injured in Mawlamyine.

HURFOM: (February 28 2021) The newly formed Union Election Commission established by the military junta requested by letter to political parties,  to send them research on “Proportional Representation (PR) Systems”. The military claims that such a system  will be used in their promised new election.

Yarmanya Times Chief Editor arrested: Whereabout unknown

HURFOM: On February 28, 2021, during his live broadcasting about a protest in Phep Khin Ward, Mawlamyine, the Chief Editor of the Mon State based Yarmanya Times News Agency, Ko Lin Tun, was arrested by police forces. The incident took place at about 1 pm.

Press rejects pressure from military council to not use term –“military junta”

HURFOM: On February 11, 2021, the military council controlled the Ministry of Information informed the Myanmar Media Council not to use the term “military junta”, rather to use “State Administrative Council”.

MUP to meet with the newly formed Union Election Commission

HURFOM: On February 22, 2021, a new Union Election Commission (UEC) was formed by the State Administrative Council, and the military has  invited political parties to join a first meeting which will be held at the Office of the UEC in Naypyidaw on February 26.

Activist say MUP should not join military council

HURFOM: Activists in Mawlamyine, are critical of the Mon Unity Party (MUP) decision to join the newly created military council.  They argue the MUP is a political party that has been elected by the people, and as such does not have any legitimacy to join the military council.

The Human Rights Foundation of Monland Calls on Ethnic Armed Organisations to Provide Support to Civilians Fleeing Injustices

HURFOM: 22 February 2021: The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) is alarmed at the increasing rate of violence against civilians, including human rights defenders, activists and journalists following the military coup on 1 February 2021. Over the weekend, at least two people were killed in Mandalay in a brutal crackdown. Security forces used lethal ammunition, including live rounds and rubber bullets in their response to peaceful protesters as well as marbles, stones, nuts and screws welded into small harmful spiked objects. As the situation continues to deteriorate and the rights of people on the ground are increasingly at risk, HURFOM calls on ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) to use their authority in their controlled areas to protect dissidents in Burmese cities who have been forced to flee to the borderlands.

EAOs chose not to engage in a dialogue with military council

HURFOM: Following the  February 1st coup, the military junta dissolved the National Reconciliation and Peace Center (NRPC) and on February 2, 2021, informed the Ethnic Armed Organization (EAOs) they must discuss the future of the peace process with a newly created military committee.

Military council amends laws to oppress the CDM
