Two NLD members arrested in Thaton Township

HURFOM: On October 20^th, 2024, two members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Party from In Kywell village, Thaton Township Mon State were arrested by the military junta.

Local villagers reported to HURFOM, that 44-year-old Saw Tar Tea and 42-year-old Saw Chit were accused of providing support to the People’s Defense Force, and a joint team of soldiers and the police arrested them at their houses, at 8 pm.

Junta extorts 5,000 MMK for permit allowing two men to ride motorbike in Ye

HURFOM: In 2023, the junta banned two men from riding the same motorbike in Ye Township, Mon State, but in October 2024, the authority had to lift the ban, according to the locals.

According to locals, beginning October 1^st, 20224, the junta began issuing a permit for two men to ride the same motorbike.  The permit includes the name, birthdate, address, color of motorbike and license plate.

Woman injured by yet more indiscriminate artillery attacks in Thane Za Yet

HURFOM: On October 22^nd, 2024, the 310^th artillery regiment targeted Thane Za Yet Town, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State with four indiscriminate artillery attacks.  There have been no active armed clashes in the nearby area.

Armed groups force plantation workers to apply for travel documents

HURFOM: In Ye Township, Mon State, the junta-appointed Administrators claimed that the rubber plantation workers must obtain recommendation letters from them, in order to go to their workplace safely and at the same time.

Weekly Analysis: Military Junta Ramps Up Conscription Efforts in Southeastern Burma

Nearly four years have passed since the attempted coup. During that time, the military has exerted widespread force and violence against innocent civilians. In response, many pro-democracy forces have been established to challenge the regime’s unjust quest for power. There have been significant losses in territory and bases that the junta once claimed, in addition to record levels of military defections. In response, they mandated the implementation of the People’s Service Law to conscript young men and women to fight against democracy.

Across targeted areas of the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) in Mon State, Karen State, and the Tanintharyi region, families are feeling the devastating impacts of losing their sons and daughters to a war that is fought against their own interests. The junta has ramped up its conscription efforts in Mon State, initiating the sixth batch of military training by targeting young individuals across the region. This latest round of recruitment has seen an increase in financial incentives, suggesting a shift from traditional recruitment methods. Instead of relying solely on defense funds, the junta appears to be pressuring business owners across various townships in Mon State to contribute to funding military conscription efforts.

Junta’s military operation forces 3,000 residents to flee Pu Law

HURFOM: Since October 14, 2024, the military junta has launched operations in 12 villages in Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division and forced more than 3,000 residents to flee their homes, according to social workers who help displaced villagers.

Prolonged displacement creates livelihood hardships for Ah Nan Kwin

HURFOM: Since August, 2024, there has been an intense battle in Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State and more than 4,000 residents have had to flee their homes.

The battle continues to be intense and displaced villagers are unable to return to their community. It has been more than three months of displacement now, and residents are facing significant livelihood hardships.

HURFOM: On October 20^th, 2024, troops from the Mawrawaddy Navy Command shot and injured two villagers from Thel Chaung village, Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division for riding a motorbike.

Political prisoner dies in Dawei Prison

HURFOM: On October 17^th, 2024, an elderly political prisoner who was serving his prison term in the Dawei Prison, Tenasserim Division died, according to an October 20^th statement issued by the Dawei District Network for Political Prisoners.

Junta regiment in Long Lone Township kills five villagers

HURFOM: On October 10^th, 2024, the military regiment began a multi-day operation in Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.  By   October 16, the regiment had killed three villagers. Then, two other villagers were killed on October 21^st, 2024.
