Political prisoner dies in Dawei Prison due to insufficient health care

HURFOM: On October 3rd, 2025, a political prisoner held in the Dawei Prison, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division lost his life due to lack of adequate health care services in the prison.

48-year-old U Aung Ko Oo who was from Shin Mote Htee village, Dawei Township and jailed for acts related to politics.

He was arrested in early 2021 and sentenced to eight years imprisonment under section 505(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

U Aung Ko Oo, suffered from heart disease that was getting worse during his prison term, but he was not granted access to proper or timely health care services in the prison.

On October 3rd, he died after being moved to a ward in the Dawei General Hospital.  According to the Political Prisoners’ Network (Dawei District) due to a lack of timely and adequate health care services, political prisoners usually receive treatment if any outside the prison

There is no adequate health care in the Dawei Prison. There is no doctor. They intentionally kill the political prisoners in both direct and indirect ways,” said a spokesperson from the network.

As of today, three political prisoners from the Dawei Prison have died due to insufficient and timely access to health care services within the prison.
