Junta’s air assaults destroy approximately 20 houses in Bilin

HURFOM: In the second week of February, 2024, the military junta launched two air assaults on Win Tar Ban village, Bilin Township, Mon State that destroyed 17 houses, reported the Thaton District Karen National Union.

Young man steps on landmine – loses leg

HURFOM: On February 18th, 2024, a 28-year-old man from War Dat Kwin village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine and lost one of his legs.

Ko Yan Pine Soe went into the forest near his village to collect grass for making brooms. He stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg. Landmine debris also penetrated his entire body.

Electricity company extorts villagers in Southern Ye with unannounced fee rate

HURFOM: The Southern Myanmar Development Company, a private electricity distributor in Southern Ye Township, Mon State, increased its fees for street lighting to 10,000 MMK per month in January, 2025.  Villagers view the increase as extortion.

Paung resident shot and killed by junta’s forces during arrest

HURFOM: On February 14th, 2024, junta’s forces went to arrest a local man from Ye Twin Gone village in his home, but he was shot and killed during the arrest.  Ye Twin Gone is located in the Kaw Ka Dike village tract, Paung Township, Mon State.

Young people arrested in Mon State after announcement of conscription bill

HURFOM: The military junta enacted the forced conscription bill on February 10th, 2024 and following approval of the bill, some young people from different townships and villages in Mon State were arrested by junta’s force without cause.

Two young men from Ye Township were arrested at Myay Ni Gone Ward, Mawlamyine on February 11th while a man and a woman from Kyone Ka Dat village, Thanbyuzayat Township were arrested on February 13th.

HURFOM, Third Week of February 2024

Over the last week, the military junta intensified and scaled up its attacks against civilians. In retaliation for the widespread support of the resistance movement, the Burma Army is targeting innocent civilians.

Dozens have been arbitrarily arrested and detained on baseless allegations and are charged in a legal system with no legitimate basis. Many have been forced into confessions and are tortured in the process. The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) continues to monitor the situation closely.

The number of those arrested has sharply increased since the beginning of 2024. One local who was detained in Thanbyuzayat by the Burma Army was accused of supporting the local resistance forces in Mon State on 10 February 2024. The victim, age 43 years old and a motorcycle repairman was arrested in the evening by junta forces. The regime continues to crack down on fundamental rights and freedoms, including participation in protests.

Junta’s conscription bill creates fear and worry among youth

HURFOM: The military junta has enacted the forced conscription bill on February 10th, 2024 which has created fear and worry amongst those youth in the age range for military service.

According to the conscription bill, men who are in the 18-35 age range and women who are in the 18-27 age range can be selected for military service.

16 Kan Bauk residents arrested within three months

February 16, 2024

HURFOM: The military junta has been conducting more and more arrests and house searches in the Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim.  Between December, 2023 and February, 2024 16 villagers were arrested.

The junta has been searching houses in villages in the Kan Bauk area. They also checked the ‘recent call list’,” said a Kan Buak resident.

Woman steps on landmine in Tha Yet Chaung

HURFOM: On February 12th, 2024, 40-year-old Daw Myint was on her way to her workplace at a rubber plantation near Kyar Inn village when she stepped on a landmine. She sustained injuries to one foot and lost the other.

Day Myint is from Pan Taw village, Tha Yet Chaung Township, Tenasserim Division.
