Residents in airport project area ordered to move within two months

HURFOM: In June 2022, the military council announced a new international seaport and airport would be constructed on 4,600-acres of land in Mudon Township, Mon State.
On May 21st, 2024, the Mudon Township General Administration Department issued an order that the residents of more than 20 houses in Kyike Ywelve village, which are located in the project area, must move out within two months starting May 23.
“They called for a meeting and we’ve thought they postponed the date we had to move out as the rainy season approaches. But they ordered us to demolish our houses within two months,” said a local resident.
The house owners have not yet received promised monetary compensation from the junta, and will find it difficult to construct a new house in the rainy season. The land plots provided to the residents as part of their compensation is also too small to build a house.
“Those who lost their houses have land plots to build new houses. The junta also gave monetary compensation for the building. But many villagers have received nothing as they’ve failed to show illegal documents for ownership,” said a villager.
The international seaport will be constructed between Blood Nyaung Wine and Well Ka Le villages, Mudon Township while the international airport will be constructed nearby Kaw Pa Ran village, Mudon Township. Due to the project, residents from Nine Hlone, Nyaung Gone and Ma Yan villages, Mudon Township have lost most of their land plots and houses.
