HURFOM: On May 22nd, 2024, the police station and the junta’s check-point at the entrance of Ka Lane Aung Town, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division was attacked by the joint resistance forces.

The junta closed the gate for three days and reopened the gate on May 25th. However, now security forces are extorting money from travelers and motorists claiming they have to pay for “passing through the gate”.

Before, we had to pay 2,000 MMK per car. After the re-opening, they demanded even 20,000 MMK per vehicle. We have to pay the amount they demand but it looks like they’ve intentionally abused us,” said a motorist.

Besides monetary extortion, the junta has also tightened the security at the gate.

When the armed clash happened, most residents fled home. Now, they came back but everyone has to live with caution,” said a resident.

Since May 1st, 2024, the military junta has targeted the villages nearby Ka Lane Aung Town with indiscriminate artillery attacks that have resulted in casualties and forced relocations.
