Civil Disobedience Movement member and vendor arrested in Kyike Hto

HURFOM: In the last week of February, 2024, a schoolteacher who joined the “Civil Disobedience Movement – CDM” and a male vendor from Kyike Hto Township, Mon State were arrested by the military junta.

On February 21^st, 35-year-old CDM schoolteacher, Daw Phyu Phyu Khine from Mell Yone Gyi village was arrested by the junta at the “Lat Pya” check-point in Kyike Hto City.

Junta’s troops recklessly shoot and injure villager in Bilin

HRUFOM: On February 25th, 2024, the 409th Light Infantry Battalion based in Win Tar Ban village, Bilin Township, Mon State, recklessly shot and injured a villager.

According to local sources and the Thaton District Karen National Union, junta troops shot 33-year-old Saw Cha Wall near the “Naung Ka Tote” stream. He sustained an injury to his left elbow.

Three civilians injured during armed attack at Mote Pa Lin Check-point

HURFOM: On February 23rd, 2024, the joint revolutionary forces attacked the soldiers and police forces stationed at the check-point near Mote Pa Lin village, Kyiek Hto Township, Mon State.

During the armed clash, two civilians and a 40-year-old female street vendor were shot and sustained injuries.

Administrators extort villagers for letter permitting travel or transport of goods

HURFOM: Villagers from Kan Bauk area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim now need “recommendation letters” to travel or visit other areas/townships or when transporting rice and food. Village and ward administrators have begun to extort money from those who need such letters.

Chief Minister’s “conscription law” frighten local youth in Chaung Zone

HURFOM: The Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein has claimed that 47 young men from Chaung Zone Township, Mon State had to join military service in accordance with the conscription law.  This news has created worry and fright among young people.

Junta’s indiscriminate artillery attack forces three villages to flee homes

HURFOM: The military junta launched indiscriminate artillery attacks in Tha Yet Chaung Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division forcing residents from three villages to flee their homes, report local sources.

On February 20th, 2024, the People’s Defense Force attacked a military check-point near Win Wa Bridge, Tha Yet Chaung Township. The junta responded with indiscriminate artillery attacks on nearby villages on February 22nd.

Armed groups extort money from motorists on Ye – Thanbyuzayat Highway Road

HURFOM: Motorists using the Ye – Thanbyuzayat Highway Road, Ye Township, Mon State have reported to HURFOM, that they have been extorted by armed groups who control part of the road.

The armed group employs “stop and checks’ between Ka Nin Ka Maw and Aung Thar Yar villages, Ye Township, Mon State in order to extort money from motorists.   Extortion has ranged from 40,000 to 100,000 MMK per vehicle.

Parents withdraw children from schools following enactment of conscription law

HURFOM: Currently grade promotion or matriculation exams are scheduled in the school system,  but parents are afraid of the conscription law recently enacted by the military junta,  and have withdrawn their children from schools. 

“The parents can’t wait for the end of the exam period. They fear that their children will have to join the military, so they have  withdrawn them from school. Now, big schools have lost about 30 to 50 students and small schools lost about 10 to 20 students,” said a social worker from Mudon Township who helps local matriculated students.

Six Villages Forced to Flee Amid Dawei Eastern Forest Conflict

HRUFOM: Six villages in the Dawei Eastern Forest area have been forced to evacuate their homes due to heavy and prolonged armed clashes between the military junta and the People’s Defense Forces. The conflict escalated after the People’s Defense Forces attacked 17 military trucks near Thin Gan Tone village on February 17, sparking intense battles that have continued since.

No armed clashes, yet Junta’s used drone assaults and kills local woman

HURFOM: On February 16^th, 2024, the military junta dropped a bomb using a drone on Lut Shan village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State and killed a local woman. Sources reported there was no armed clash at the time.

The 325^th Artillery Regiment based in Wel Ka Li, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State was responsible for the attack. The 53-year-old woman was hit by bomb debris on her head and died.
