Junta arrests  woman in Bilin: Accuses her of supporting former parliamentarians

HURFOM: On July 12, 2023, the junta arrested a woman living in Sa Yar San Ward, Bilin Town, Mon State after accusing her of supporting a ‘terrorist group’.

The junta alleges that the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), a Burmese legislative body in exile, representing a group of National League for Democracy lawmakers and members of parliament ousted in the 2021 Myanmar coup d’état is a terrorist group.

Local battalion arrests villagers, forces them to porter supplies in Mudon Township

HURFOM: The 318th  Artillery Battalion based in Ah Bit village, Mudon Township, Mon State arrested villagers and forced them to carry military supplies.

On July 10, 2023, four villagers from Ka Log Thog village who were working at their plantation in Kha Lae – Da Gon Die were arrested by members of the battalion and forced to carry military supplies along a  jungle route.

G.A.D. orders MUP to remove office signboards in villages

HURFOM: On July 8, 2023, the Township General Administration Department (GAD)  ordered the Mon Unity Party (MUP) to remove their office signboards in villages across Mon State.

It isn’t only the MUP that must remove their signboards. All political parties have to do so. The township offices can use their sign boards but offices in villages or wards have to remove their signboards. We’ve already instructed the village/ward office to remove their signboards,” said a member of the central executive committee (CEC) of the MUP.

Thaton villager seriously injured by landmine

HURFOM: At approximately 7 am on July 11, 2023, 45-year-old U Aung Myint Kyi from Naung Kalar village, Thaton Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine and was seriously injured.

The incident occurred near Myay Ne Gone village, which is located beside the Yangon-Mawlamyine Highway Road.

Weekly Overview: Human Rights Situation in Mon State, Karen State, and Tanintharyi Region

HURFOM | July First Week

Human rights violations in Mon State continue to increase steadily. In the two and a half years since the attempted coup, military impunity is in every facet of life in Southeastern Burma. Civilians continue to carry the burden of their livelihoods being strained. Extortion is ongoing at checkpoints, and indiscriminate firing regularly threatens the safety of local people. The affiliation of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) to the junta has also caused divisions.

At the end of June, the 31st local military battalion launched indiscriminate artillery attacks on Kyouk Eye village, Khaw Zar Sub-township, Southern Ye Township, Mon State, killing a local woman. The NMSP visited the victims’ houses to offer financial support. However, local Mon people have criticized them for their conduct in this incident and are questioning their political stance with the junta:

Detainees released after paying a ransom

HURFOM: On June 19th  and 20th , 2023, six villagers from Phaung Taw village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division were arrested by the Mawrawaddy Navy Command after being accused of having links with the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and contributing to the “Flower Strike”.
