October 14, 2025

HURFOM: On August 19th, 2025, an 18-year-old man from Thar Yar Mon village, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division was arrested by a junta regiment after being accused of having connections with revolutionary forces.

After nearly two-months detention, he was released on October 8th, 2025. However, a source close to their family told HURFOM that the family had to pay four million MMK for his release.

We had no trace of him for a week after the arrest but we got news of his whereabouts the following week. The army said the family must pay 5,000 MMK per day for food costs during his detention and 3.5 million MMK for his release. The family had to pay four million MMK in total,” said the source.

The regiment did not hand over the motorbikes or mobile phones of the young men which they had seized, during the arrest. The army also threatened the family that if the news of paying ransom was released to the public, they would “do something” to them.

HURFOM was informed that during the detention, the junta’s soldiers punched; slapped and choked the young man and tied him with an iron chain.

The army threatened the young man to not let anyone know they had beaten and tortured him. If anyone comes to know about that, they would kill him. The young man was really frightened,” said a resident.

According to an October 8th statement issued by the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP), from February 1st, 2024 to October 8th, 2025, the military junta has arrested 29,794 civilians across the country.  There are still 22,493 persons in detention,
