3000 Chaung Hna Kwa area residents flee homes due to daily artillery attacks

HURFOM: On November 10, 2023, armed clashes between the military junta and the revolutionary forces broke out in the Chaung Hna Kwa area, Kyikemayaw Township, Mon State. For more than two weeks heavy fighting has taken place.
The military junta has reinforced their troops in Mudon Township, and Taung Ka Lay village, Kyikemayaw Township. Their artillery regiment based in Ah Bit village, Mudon Township has continually targeted villages in the Chaung Hna Kwa area everyday with artillery attacks.

HURFOM: On November 24, 2023, the military junta launched an artillery attack on In Ka Boe village, Kyike Hto Township, Mon State that killed an 80-year-old woman. reported local sources.
Local sources report that the military regiment was hiding outside the village and launched at least four artillery attacks in one day. One shell exploded at the “staff barracks” in an oil palm plantation located in the eastern village.

Now, I have to let him do what he wants,” said a disappointed mother from a village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.

In Southeastern Burma, violence remains targeted against civilians who are living in parts of the country where conflict is intensifying. Among the most vulnerable are women and children, who comprise the majority of those displaced, and the last week included the beginning of the ‘16 Day Campaign to End Gender-Based Violence,’ which is acknowledged by many human rights groups in Burma. During these challenging times of turmoil and uncertainty, the commitment to ending gendered violence is affirmed, and the work to spread awareness is ongoing. For example, the Karen Women’s Organization shared their theme, including a call to create a community free from violence against women.

The Thaton District Karen National Union stated these attacks have forced more than 3,000 villagers to flee from their homes. In addition, the attacks on many villages in Thaton Township, pushes the internally displaced numbers to as many as 150,000 villagers.
