HURFOM | June Week One

The military junta has increased their animosity towards civilians as indiscriminate firing and unprovoked attacks claimed the lives of many this week, including women, older adults and children. Even those with disabilities are not spared by the bullets of the regime’s guns. Burma Army soldiers have no military strategy other than to shoot when they declare someone a target. Unfounded accusations and allegations of loyalties to opposition groups are ongoing as dozens are charged and detained without evidence. The rule of law in the courts has lost all credibility, so many dare not even appeal their cases. Without justice, there cannot be any accountability through domestic legal systems.

Junta seizes vehicles, demands ransom in Hpa-An

HURFOM: The military junta is using the pretext of security concerns to stop and inspect vehicles in Hpa-An township, Karen state.  Some of the vehicles are being seized and ransomed for large amounts of money. 

Various administrative arms of the junta’s council, such as the police, General Administrative Department (GAD), and the junta-backed Border Guard Force (BGF), are involved in the stop, search and seizures.

Junta’s artillery attack injures five residents in Bee Lin

HURFOM: On June 1, 2023, the military junta launched an artillery attack on Shwe Yaung Pya village, Bee Lin Township, Mon State.  Five residents including three children were injured. There was no armed conflict or attack from resistance forces prior to the junta’s artillery attack.

Junta’s artillery and air assaults kill women and children in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: The military junta is targeting innocent civilians in the area controlled by the 6th Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army in Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State. They have launched artillery and air assaults nearly every day.

In the month of April, 2023, the junta launched 184 artillery attacks and 31 air assaults targeting Kaw Ka Rate.  The attacks killed and injured innocent civilians including women and children.

Junta soldiers execute two men, while in hiding

HURFOM: On May 30, two Dawei men were shot and killed near the intersection of Saw Mi Nyo road, Bom Maw ward, Dawei city.

There is no evidence the men had  committed  any crime.

There was a large patch of blood and a motorcycle burned nearby,” said a resident who visited the site on the morning of May 31.

Couple killed by junta’s artillery attack on their way home to Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: In the last week of May, residents of Kaw Ka Rate Township, in Karen State  have suffered from constant artillery attacks by the junta.

The number of those killed and injured, as well as houses destroyed has been climbing. 

Information-collection teams have experienced challenges gathering data due to the severity of the attacks.

Junta detains 12 villagers: Uses them as hostages in Yebyu

June 2, 2023

HURFOM: Since last week, the artillery unit based in Yebyu Township has still not released approximately 12 villagers they detained. The junta forces are urging community members to step forward and be arrested in exchange for the release of the hostages.

The 12 detainees include both men and women, and according to local witnesses they are being beaten. The soldiers who are holding them say,  until another  person comes forward to be arrested and take their place, the detainees will continue to be held captive.

Junta burns loots and burns houses,  arrests people to be used as human shields in Dawei

HURFOM: According to local sources, junta forces have attacked villages in Dawei over the course of two days.  First at around noon on May 28th, junta forces with about 160 troops raided Yay Wine village, located in in the Tenasserim Region, and burned 2 homes.  Junta forces also  captured at least 8 local people to use as human shields.

Schools soon to open: Parents worry as Karen troops are active in Mon villages

HURFOM: The 6th Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army and their alliance partners, the People’s Defense Forces are active in Mon villages in Kyarinnseikyi Township, in Karen State. This region falls under the control of both the Karen National Union and the New Mon State Party. 

The arrival of these troops is causing concern for  parents as the school year is about to begin.

Civilian casualties escalates in armed conflict areas

HURFOM: Innocent civilians are routinely being injured or killed admits escalating armed conflicts.

Local people are concerned about their personal safety and are increasingly critical of the reckless fighting in their area by armed groups, including the junta forces.
