Junta’s artillery attack kills newborn infant and injures five residents in Kaw Ka Rate

HURFOM: On August 9th, 2024, the military junta’s “Swel Taw Gone” regiment targeted Htee Muu Hto village, Kaw Ka Rate Township, Karen State with artillery attack even though there had been no armed clash in the area. The attack killed a newborn infant and injured five other residents, according to the central Karen National Union.

Junta seizes and seals a house and tea shop in Thaton

HURFOM: Local sources reported to HURFOM, that on August 15th, 2024, the interdepartmental authorities of the military junta seized and sealed the house and teashop of 41-year-old U Chit Lin Nine from Lake Inn Ward, Thaton City, Mon State.

U Chit Lin Nine was arrested on July 10th, 2024 and charged under Sections 50(J) and 52(A) of the Anti-Terrorist Act.

Junta kills two residents and injures five others in Bilin

August 22, 2024

HURFOM: On August 17th, 2024, the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army and the People’s Defense Force attacked junta’s forces stationed at the “Ma Saw” Bridge in Bilin Township, Mon State. Soon after the attack, the junta responded with four indiscriminate artillery attacks on nearby villages.

The artillery explosions killed 24-year-old Naw Moe Moe Aye from Taung Kalay village and injured five residents from Taung Kalay and Shwe In Don villages.

Theft on the rise in Ye: Authorities fail to respond

Locals report to HURFOM that with increasing darkness, incidents of theft from residential houses, monasteries and pagodas in Ye Town are on the rise.

Forced Conscription Drive Takes Toll on Local Communities

In response to record losses of Burma Army soldiers by the opposition forces and defections of soldiers and commanders, as well as economic turmoil and rising poverty as a result of nationwide conflict, it was declared that the 2010 People’s Military Service Law, mandating conscription, would be enforced for the first time since it was passed.

Since this announcement, young men and women have fled to neighboring countries for their safety. However, countries like Thailand have enforced stricter screening mechanisms for Burmese citizens entering. For those remaining inside Burma, the junta has taken additional steps to prevent young people from leaving by denying individuals between the ages of 23 and 35 the opportunity to depart from Yangon by air. This action follows a similar enforcement in May when the military junta temporarily banned all men from working abroad.

Residents experience prolong and frequent telecommunication cutoff in Mon and Tenasserim

Residents removed by new airport project face hardship

HURFOM: On May 23rd, 2024, residents from Kyike Ywelve village, Mudon Township, Mon State were removed by the military junta because the junta plans to build a new international airport on their lands. l

Despite receiving some compensation, residents are unable to construct new houses due to inadequate funds, labor shortages and the high price of construction materials. In addition the land plots provided by the junta,  do not have enough space to build a new house.
