Junta Forces Use Local Villagers as Human Shields in Dawei District

HURFOM: In Yephyu Township, Dawei District, Tanintharyi Region, the junta troops advancing into the Dawei Special Economic Zone have reportedly detained two local villagers, forcing them to serve as human shields, according to accounts shared with HURFOM reporters by local residents.
Since November 7, a column of over 100 junta troops has advanced from Pantin-Inn village in Launglon Township, entering the Nabule area within the Dawei Special Economic Zone. On November 9, as the military forces pushed further into the Nabule village tract, they reportedly seized a man and a woman, both around 50 years old, from Mudoo village, using them as human shields. “The soldiers took them without warning, treating them as if they were part of their security,” said a local woman who preferred to remain anonymous.
The junta’s incursion into Nabule has also led to widespread displacement, with thousands of residents from villages such as Nabule, Leishong, Paradat, and Mudoo fleeing their homes to seek safety in nearby villages and forested areas. Many of those displaced are now facing severe shortages of food and basic supplies as they hide in remote locations to avoid encountering military forces.
The junta troops initially reached the Maungmagan police station on November 5 before advancing into Yephyu Township, where they have continued their oppressive tactics. This includes the use of civilians as human shields, a method previously documented by HURFOM in Tanintharyi, as part of the junta’s increasing trend of violent and coercive measures against local populations.
The displaced communities now face grave challenges in accessing shelter, food, and medical care, as the military presence has destabilized essential services and supply chains throughout the area.
