Junta launches military operation in Kyauk Ne Maw forcing residents to flee home

HURFOM: On September 9th, 2024, the joint People’s Defense Forces attacked the “Pyu Saw Htee” military base in Kyauk Ne Maw village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division.

Following the attack, a military regiment consisting of about 100 troops entered Kyauk Ne Maw village by navy ship and stationed themselves in the village.

Three villagers injured by artillery attack die due to belated medical treatment

HURFOM: In the morning of September 11th, 2024, an armed clash took place between the military junta and the local People’s Defense Force at Kywel Htain Kone village, Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division. The military regiment based at “Baw Di Karm” Bridge launched an artillery attack to support their troops.

A weekly update by the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) on the situation on the ground. Summary data includes Mon State, Karen State and Tanintharyi region.

For decades, the military junta has evaded accountability for their crimes against women and girls. Protected by military courts under the 2008 Constitution and a lack of transparency or investigation into any crime related to conflict-related sexual violence, survivors have suffered from trauma and a lack of accountability. Every quarter, the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) releases an update titled ‘Voice Up,’ which provides documentation and analysis on the violations perpetrated against women and girls in target areas of Mon State, Karen State and the Tanintharyi region.

Junta arrests and extorts two local men from Kaw Thaung

HURFOM: On September 7th, 2024, the military junta arrested and extorted money from two local men from 12-Mile village, 10-Mile village tract, Kaw Thaung Township, Tenasserim Division.

Ko Pine Phyo and his friend went to Chan Phan village to buy “rubber slices” when they encountered a joint military patrol group. The soldiers and the Administrator, Kyaw Soe accused them of conducting a rubber trade without having an official license and arrested them.

Four residents disappear after being arrested by regiment in Long Lone

HURFOM: On September 10th, 2024, a junta’s regiment arrested four residents from villages in Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division. The four victims have not yet been released.

The regiment launched military operations in Thar Yar Gone, Thel Pu Taung, Min Yat, Yaw Houng Wa, Pan Da Lell, Inn Sought and Tha Byar villages.  The regiment searched houses in Yaw Houng Wa village and arrested a villager entroute to Dawei City by motorbike.

Junta’s drone attack injuries six residents in Tenasserim

HURFOM: A military regiment consisting of about 200 troops fought with the local People’s Defense Force in Burnlaw village track, Tenasserim Township, Tenasserim Division, from September 4th to 9th, 2024.  The military junta employed drone attacks that injured six residents.

Local man steps on landmine and sustains serious injury in Thanbyuzayat

September 13, 2024

HURFOM: On September 10th, 2024, a local man from Sa Khan Gyi (inside) village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State stepped on a landmine.  He sustained a serious injury to his legs and abdomen, from the explosion.

35-year-old Ko Ba Htoo and his wife were walking to a rubber plantation to do some cleaning when Ko Ba Htoo stepped on a landmine.

Displaced residents from Ah Nan Kwin village in need of aid

HURFOM: In the second week of August 2024, a huge battle between the military junta and the Karen National Liberation Army took place in Ah Nan Kwin village, Kyarinnseikyi Township, Karen State, and more than 4,000 residents from nearby ten villages had to flee their homes.

Telecommunication networks cut off in Dawei’s Eastern Forest Area

September 12, 2024

HURFOM: Since September 1st, 2024, the telecommunication network has been cut off in villages in the Dawei Eastern Forest Area, Dawei Township, Tenasserim Division.

Since after the attempted coup, only the Atom (Telenor) operator is available in this area. 

Telecommunication towers have to be run with gasoline generators due to the lack of electricity. However, the company’s staff have not come to refuel the generator since September 1st creating a telecommunication blackout from Wa Gone to Hein Dar villages.

Passenger and two residents injured in Bilin Battle

September 12, 2024

HURFOM: On September 9th, 2024, the joint resistance forces had attacked the “Tan Da Dar” security gate of the military junta nearby Tha Pyay Ne village, Bilin Township, Mon State and there was a heavy battle between two groups.

A passenger truck was stuck in the battle and a 37-year-old passenger Daw K Thi Oo who was from Ye Township was shot and sustained an injury at her waist.
