Junta kills villagers and torches houses in Na Bu Lel

HURFOM: On October 28, 2023, a military unit entered villages in Na Bu Lel area, Yebyu Township, Tenasserim Division and killed four villagers and torched five houses.

The military unit consisted of more than 100 troops and they left the Na Bu Lel area on October 22. However, they re-entered the area again on October 24 and launched military operations targeting Lel Shaung, Pa Ra Dat and Htein Gyi villages.

Three young boys arrested at check-point, not yet released after a week

HURFOM: On October 22, 2023, three young boys all aged approximately 15 years old, were arrested by the military junta at the check-point near Nan Taung village, Pu Law Township, Tenasserim Division, according to the local sources.

Junta’ artillery attack injures four residents in Kyike Hto

November 2, 2023

HURFOM: In the third week of October, 2023, four residents from Kyike Hto Township, Mon State were injured by artillery attacks launched by the military junta, according to the statement of the Thaton District Karen National Union.

On October 19, the 2nd Light Infantry Battalion based in Kyike Hto Township launched an artillery attack on Mae Yone village and injured a 27-year-old woman.

Junta arrests two men from Min Yat village

November 2, 2023

HURFOM: On October 26, 2023, two men from Min Yat village, Long Lone Township, Tenasserim Division were arrested by the military junta.

About 50 troops entered Min Yat village via a jungle route and arrested 40-year-old Ko Aung Kyaw Soe and 17-year-old Ko Thar Thar, according to a local source.

Armed group extorts money from villagers in Khaw Zar

HURFOM: Local people reported to HURFOM that an armed group is extorting money from their villages in Khaw Zar Sub-township, Ye Township, Mon State. The armed group has been demanding payments of between 50,000 MMK to 170,000 MMK per household.

The Military Junta Is Increasingly Manipulating the Rule of Law in
Burma to Target Civilians and Pro-Democracy Forces

Throughout October, the regime routinely targeted civilians in an ongoing campaign to undermine their fundamental freedoms. The people are resilient and have not given up their fight for democracy. The Burma Army knows that they are losing the war they have waged, and in response, they have scaled up attacks to try and instill terror and fear. The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) remains committed to documenting the assaults and attacks indicative of military impunity. 

While carrying out these horrendous attacks, they are trying to present an illusion to the international community that the situation in the country is normal when, in reality, it is anything but the contrary. The junta invited government officials, diplomats, ethnic revolution organizations, and even NGOs to an event commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). The NCA is not a successful pathway or platform to peace in Burma, but in their attempts to appear legitimate and committed to ‘peace,’ the junta held a lavish ceremony.

Unhealthy economy creates a drop in demand in Mon State

Unsettled politics in Burma has created a decline in the economy and there has been a drop in demand in Mon State, local shopkeepers told HURFOM.

Due to inflation and low income, many people have had to reduce their spending so there has been a drop in demand for every good.

Junta extorts money from oversea workers: Threatens their passport validity

HURFOM: On October 16, 2023, the military junta announced that Burmese overseas workers must show a recommendation letter from the Internal Revenue Department of the Ministry of Planning and Finance to prove they have paid their income tax before extending their passport validity.

The statement is intended for two types of passports – the passport for job (PJ) and the passport for seaman (PS).

Junta arrests two Paung residents -accuses them of destroying State stability

HURFOM: On October 22, 2023, a joint team of the military junta approached the house of 50-year-old U Win Nine in Ka Don Se Ward, Paung Town, Paung Township, Mon State. They said they came to check the visitor’s list,  but instead arrested U Win Nine.
