Junta arrests two Paung residents -accuses them of destroying State stability

HURFOM: On October 22, 2023, a joint team of the military junta approached the house of 50-year-old U Win Nine in Ka Don Se Ward, Paung Town, Paung Township, Mon State. They said they came to check the visitor’s list, but instead arrested U Win Nine.
The junta accused him of sharing revolutionary news via his mobile phone and social media account. U Win Nine has been charged under the Burmese Criminal Act #505(A).
They also arrested 20-year-old Ko Kaung Myat during a “stop and check” of travelers near Yin Nyein village, Paung Township. Ko Kaung Myat has been accused of sharing the news about the National Unity Government and the People’s Defense Force via his mobile phone. He has also been charged under section 505(A).
“The main reason for the arrest and the charge is sharing revolutionary posts via their phones (social media accounts). They aren’t allowed to meet with family members. His (Ko Kaung Myat) family members are worried about him,” said a resident from Ka Lar Chaung village, Paung Township.
The junta controlled state press issued a statement on October 24 saying the two Paung residents were arrested and charged because they attempted to destroy the stability of the State.
In response to that statement, the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP), noted the junta routinely offers dubious rationales to justify the arrest of 796 residents from Mon State.
