It has been a very long year for the people of Burma, who have been forced to endure ongoing violence perpetrated against them with impunity. The delayed and inadequate reply by the international community has only made things more challenging for those regularly being impacted by the atrocities deployed against them. With so much injustice and no reliable pathways for accountability and justice, the war is only worsening. Against all odds, civilians have remained resilient at the cost of their survival. They are on the run constantly and refuse to see the junta as any measure of humanity.

HURFOM: On December 13th, 2023, the military junta destroyed and looted villagers’ houses in Nyin Maw village, Long Lone Township, Dawei District, Tenasserim Division.
About 50 troops invaded the village arriving in five Vigo cars at midnight. They proceeded to steal gold, cash and other valuables, reported villagers.

HURFOM: From November 30th to December 7th, 2023, at least 70 residents including business persons in Thanbyuzayat Town, Mon State were arrested by the junta.
On November 30th, while doing a “stop and check” in Thanbyuzayat, junta forces arrested 44-year-old U Mya Than, for possession of a pistol and some bullets. The same night U Ta Yoke, owner of “Hey Ma Won” a construction material store, was also arrested.

HURFOM: On December 11th, 2023, two reporters with the Tenasserim Division based “Dawei Watch” news agency were arrested by the junta at their home.
The two reporters, 40-year-old Ko Aung San Oo and Ko Myo Myint Oo were arrested at midnight in Myeik City.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) reports there has been an increased use of anti personnel landmines across Burma.
