At least 70 residents arrested within a week in Thanbyuzayat

HURFOM: From November 30th to December 7th, 2023, at least 70 residents including business persons in Thanbyuzayat Town, Mon State were arrested by the junta.
On November 30th, while doing a “stop and check” in Thanbyuzayat, junta forces arrested 44-year-old U Mya Than, for possession of a pistol and some bullets. The same night U Ta Yoke, owner of “Hey Ma Won” a construction material store, was also arrested.
Then, ten gold shop owners, grocery store owners and various young people were arrested.
The military junta continued to arrest up to as many as 70 residents by December 7th.
“Some are detained at the Thanbyuzayat Town Police Station while others are detained at the military base near the town. Most have not been allowed contact with their family members,” said a source.
Most of those arrested are political activists and have participated in anti-dictatorship protests.
“They are accused of providing financial support to revolutionary forces. The arrested include, 20-year-old men and women,” said one Thanbyuzayat resident.
Some individuals have been released recently but HURFOM was unable to confirm this.
Residents of Thanbyuzayat are remaining in their homes. The military junta sealed and seized the homes of business owners they arrested.
